Got that Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator's first album Bastard, and the two mixtapes. Waiting for Tyler's next album to come out. Those two songs are on it. Anyone else getting down?
They are young and say something rather ignorant things from time to time, but who doesn't? Refreshing that other kids younger than me can make decent beats and do their own thing and not fall into the commercial bullshit that rap has become. Every song is the same song with people going "Ayyyy" in every possible space.
WOLF GANG GOLF WANG!

this has got me warming up to hip hop finally. today, many of the genres' artists i find to just be carbon copies of each other. the topics of money, cars, crews, turf, women as objects, etc. doesn't resonate much with me. i see a spark here.

third threads a charm!
i actually don't like earl's album very much. it's still stupid in the way most rap i don't listen to is.
tyler's where it's at.

HNNGG THIS MAKES ME RAGE. but i'm not going to rant. that's for another day. but most rap is not about cars money, etc whatever. that's what you'll find if your only idea of rap is what's on the radio. (but i don't even know if that arugment works anymore, because you have dudes like drake rapping about their emotions (shittily, but whatever) and getting it played on the radio) at any rate, it's like saying you dont' like rock cuz most is like nickel back.
but still, ironically enough, that's what a lot of their songs are about.

tyler has a pretty explicit song about rape yo.
i like odd future and i love rap, but they are becoming mad overrated. what happens is pitchfork/other blogs not usually catering to rap expose a pretty okay rap group to a userbase who has little serious experience with rap. they think it's good, and it is good. but without other rap to compare it to, they blow its goodness wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy out of proportion. yes, this probably sounds like a prepackaged 'I LIKED THEM BEFORE THEY WERE COOL' argument, but it's not supposed to be.

I didn't know shit about 'em but the Jimmy Fallon performance was great! Having the Roots as a live band was awesome, do they always perform with live muscians? The horns, random gnomes, smoke machines, and ski-masks made it all the better. Tyler reminded me of this, which I'm sure was the point, funny nonetheless.

I searched for other threads and only found one about Earl.
Lyrically I don't take it too serious as they are 20 at the oldest and 16 at the youngest. The Soulja Boi comparison is a bit absurd to me, but how people hear music is very subjective.
I really do think their beats and tone are rather refreshing. Especially, with the whole rap songs turned techno era we find ourselves in today. Growing up with Tribe and Wu tang, and gettin' bored with Cash Money, and revived with Stones Throw and Anticon, it's refreshing to hear.
It's dark days when old Cash Money songs sound good to me because they don't sound like everything right now. They had their own sound, now it's a blurred line between rap, r & b, and pop...and it's not the good kind of blurred line.
