Hey my friend is getting a new bass amp and possibly bass also (he has a Gibson "The Grabber")

I don't know much about bass stuff but he really wants to get into playing bass.
He has a SUPER shitty amp right now so he needs something punchy and well "metalcore"

Ok here is the deal with bass amps...

get the biggest, most powerful, loudest one you can that you like the sound of. If you get one that isn't loud enough life will suck ass where if it is too loud you have one of those volume knob thingys. and for a SS amp anything under 400watts to me is a waste of time so that one "should" be ok.....

I don't have any experience with the Kuston stuff so as to sound I have no idea.

Okay what about a DI box and how do they work and Uggggh he has around 1,800.00 to spend and is REALLY serious about this...so any rig ideas would be helpful.

Ideas at this point I will ask have you guys thought of finding a used ampeg SVTCL I've seen them for under $1000 before, killer fucking amp if you like big tube amps and all.. Oh for better build quality you want older, one hint other then the sr NO. is the high and Deep buttons will be black instead of white

Cabs.. There are tons of good ones out there, SWR, GK, Ampeg, ect ect. he has to work out stuff like does he like 10s or 12s or 15s ect or mixed, a lot of guys love the whole 4x10 or 8X10 thing which I can't stand I use a 2x12 and a 1x18 for most things. I also love old two 2x15 cabs like sunns.

Pedals... what sounds does he actually want

After playing bass heavy metal / metalcore for years you want two things.

You want a cold sounding amp, nothing too warm because warm is nothing I wanted in the sound mix. Ampeg does this to a T , so does any of the Gallen Kruger amps.

Second you want it to have enough power to present in the mix, epically if you are running with two guitar players running full blast.

If I had some cash I would go with an Ampeg SVT4 and a matching cab with it.

Not including a new bass and pedals he would really like to keep it under 1,200...

but seriously MexMaps it sounds like you know quite a bit about the sound we are searching for.

Yeah I am not the best person to ask for this sound... my sound is based on being the exact opposite of that sound... all metal the bands I liked growing up I thought the bass sounded like tinfoil I wanted big and phat.

Yeah... it sucks some times because some sound guys want to run you though a cheap DI to the PA before your amp so the the audience hears you through this shitty box instead of your fucking amp that cost a lot of money and which you have based your sounds around

might be the way to go then... I think if at all possible though he should go and try the stuff first because no matter what gear is used NO one will sound the same.

Aslo just because that is what the guy uses on tour does not mean that that is what was used in the studio and that very well could have been direct

I have not listened to them much as I hate that version of Bad company [I hate the original too] that they play on the radio twice a day here
