You can get some great deals on used cameras on ebay or craigslist, even high quality SLRs. I have a Canon AE-1 that I picked up on ebay for around $50 (it also came with a ton of other accessories/lenses). I've used a friend's Nikon and Pentax before too that were pretty solid. The main thing to look for on ebay/craigslist is that they've tested the camera and everything works of course. I really don't think you'll have to spend more than $100 unless you want something fancy.

I have an oldschool Pentax that's pretty decent. Got for under $100 - I'm sure you could find one. You could also go for an oddball Lomography with a 35mm back.

I learned on a Canon AE-1 program in the late 90's in high school. The Pentax K-1000 was also highly favored by the teacher for a good student camera.

I'd love an old Nikon FM series camera.

I'd hit up pawnshops locally,...that way you can at least test them out before you wind up with a camera with issues (such as an non operating meter).

Ebay and craigslist.

I got my Ricoh KR5 for cheap off the bay. It's basically a K1000, which is the standard student camera.

Just make sure the light meter works.

Check Andorama’s used film cameras.

You can pick up a Nikon F3 for that price.
They were the top of the manual focus food chain in the late ‘80s.
And you can get all the accessories for them still.

Auto focus run a bit more,.

Also every lens Nikon made fits almost every body they made.

As cool as Lomography cameras are they usually don't have the control an SLR has that most photo classes require. Definitely pick one up though if you end up loving photography!

Maybe you could pick up a TLR (twin lens reflex) Medium Format Camera for a little more and be the dark horse of the class.
