it's about time
but i'm not blown away like i should be after waiting for fucking years. i'm actually pretty unimpressed. especially after julian's KILLER (well, a few tracks were great and the rest sucked. kinda like the stroke's discography) solo album and everyone else's decent ones, i guess i was expecting more.

I heard this song the other night when I was drunk, so I'll have to have another listen.
I guess I would say that, back when Is This It? and Room On Fire came out, I was a huge Stokes fan. I was lucky enough to see them at St. Andrews in Detroit just a month after Is This It? came out, and it was a GREAT show. Anyway... I enjoyed the first song off of First Impressions, and thought the rest was mediocre. It's just... it's just kinda boring. It sounds like "The Strokes Do The Strokes!". You know, like a parody of sorts.
I think this song is good. We'll have to see about the rest of the record, but I can at least say that I'm soooooo glad it's only 10 tracks. Stick with what works. Nothing bloated, please.
To me, it will never get much better than yer "What Ever Happened?" and "Reptilia" and hell, all of Room On Fire, and pretty much all of Is This It? Really great, moderately complicated songs that are deceptively simple sounding. Nick Valenci is one of my favourite guitarists... always doing wonderfully melodic stuff.
Plus... I'm prreeeetttty sure this is the first time there have been ANY harmony vocals on a Strokes song. Finally!
They're a wonderful band with a lot of integrity.

i dunno, i loved the hell out of is this it, didn't care for room on fire except for like two songs, and loved most of first impressions. i gave this song another listen and i'm still not feeling it. i like where the songs goes midway through the guitar solo though. until we get to straight crash hits and i'm like NOOOOOOOO. i hope the album is going to be awesome. i totally agree with what you said about valensi. although albert's solo on vision of division is like one of my favorite strokes solos ever.
but definitely the first time any harmony vocals have been used on a strokes song as far as i remember. it was surprising!
edit: and what's up with the strokes writing songs obviously out of/reaching the limits of julian's vocal range.

One of my friends is a pretty straight-up "Anything the Strokes do" fan, so he's got everything from Albert Hammond Jr.'s solo records to Little Joy to Jules's solo stuff. He said the same thing about Phrazes... a few tracks are unreal, and the rest is dddderrrrppp??? I have yet to listen to it. I enjoy some of Cartoon Music, and most of Little Joy's record was a'ight, just nothin' new.
I will of course listen to this new one when it DROPS, but I'm going to remain cautious in any sort of over-blown hope. Still a great band, though.

EDIT In response to your edit: I think that Julian probably does that to push himself. With some artists, you push yourself beyond your limits, and you reach a new level... and it's amazing. I dig that Julian wants to push himself, but I also think we've heard the best of what he can do, and it was his first stuffs (i.e. first Strokes stuffs).

oh man, i am just like your friend. i even bought nikolai's solo album and played it way too much. unsurprisingly, he can not sing. if you haven't heard anything from phrazes you NEED to hear river of brakelights. i guess i was expecting some of that writing style to flavor the strokes' new work. definitely a great band, one of my all-time favorites for sure. but it seems like they attract hype. probably going to avoid music blogs and such until it comes out just in case

I think the vocals need to be mixed a little higher. But it does sound pretty jazzy guitar wise. Very interesting ideas presented.

Ok, well, I'm having another go with this ass, and while it might not be as energetic or like uh raw or ballsy as when we were first introduced to the Strokes, I dare you to have a couple of beers and not have some fucking FUN while you're listening to this song.
And also be like YYYYEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!
