How do these various units stack up against each other?
I am not close enough to a music store with any of them to try them out. Trying to get a sense of how they are different/similar.

The Kaoss Pad 3 will sample kinda like a Roland sampler but you only have the four pads... The KP3 can do things in real time the Roland samplers can't touch like stretching, reversing, scratching, and some of the effects... Rolands are real easy to use and are quick and dirty... Madlib makes all his stuff with the Rolands so if you've heard any of that you know what it can do... Both types are more spontaneous jam type samplers if that makes sense where the MPC is a studio programming type sampler... Kaoss pads and Rolands make it easy to catch a sample, add effects, loop it, and start layering more on top... Neither are good at sequencing tracks really, but the Roland can be capable of songs, again check Madlib... Ask away I have all three...

How do you envision Dorfmeister using a sampler... What kinda stuff do you want to do with it ?

I would like to do some Animal Collectivish type stuff on it...that would probably be the closest analogy to what I am working on...Looping drums but also longer atmospheric stuff....incorporating with guitar and vocals. Several samplers synced ....would be nice to sample and loop on the fly....simple is good.....

I am a big fan of Madlib. Did not know that was what he used.
I am probably mostly going to use it for composing and recording songs....but simple and spontaneous really appeals to me in that process.

I know that Animal Collective over the years has used a variety of the Roland samplers, SP-303, SP-404, and SP-555.

Sweet pic... I just got that record for cheap and it's great (putting it on now)... Rolands are the bomb... I used to take the old SP 202 orange one downtown with a SM57 and record homeless people vs. jesus people at lunch on 6th st... Super good times... Get a SP for cheap, see what ya think and get more stuff...

I am thinking of going for a used 404.....unless the 303's and 202's are way cheaper....or somehow better. I think a Korg KP3 might be a great partner for one of these?

Go for a KP3 and a new 404 and you have sample Gold... That record is playing in the background and it makes me think that Dose One and Subtle use the Rolands alot too... Cloudead and Anticon...

You can lock the KP3 sample time and it's effects to a tempo and loop 16-8-4-2-1 bar loops and play them all together up to 4... One sample can be 16 bars one at 8 etc... Gets crazy for drones...

The SP-202's can only use a pretty rare variety of outboard memory, SmartMedia 5.5v cards (often presented just as 5v). The things are hen's teeth. Keep in mind if you're counting on expanding the capacity.

Yeah.....I avoid anything using Smart Media.....I've seen the 128gb cards that the Korg Electribes use going for $60....there is some cool gear out there that uses those cards, though.
