And I'm planning on building a kit soon. Are Devi's DIY kits a good place to start? Or am I aiming too high too soon? I will be updating this thread periodically with a slew of dumb, irksome questions, pics, and the like. Point me in the right direction, plz :!!!:

DID YOU ALSO GET SOLDER?!

Make sure you don't use plumbing solder. Must be for electronics.

Get an aloe plant. Very important back when I only had that *!@#%(@# RS iron. Love my Weller station.

I'm gonna assume Devi's PCB's are solid, so I'd say yes, that's a good start. Pedal kits are about one of the best things to learn to solder on because they're pretty easy to solder.

Keep the tip tined and use the iron on the components and the solder on the components, not the iron on the solder and solder on the iron.

Devi's kits are good. They use like 2 component values, so it's on your head. the PCBs are as good as anyone else's.

BYOC gives you a booster project with your first order. GGG kits are cheaper. Just make sure your first kit has a fairly low parts count. Doesn't really need to be fuzz/dist/boost, but those will be easier to get advice on if it doesn't work.

beavisaudio has lots of tutorials and decent (if incomplete) info.

LOL @ aloe

Lavender oil is good, too.

The pads are tiny on devi's boards, not friendly to inexperienced soldering, IMO. Try soldering random stuff until you get comfortable, before building an effect. ABY type boxes are good for practice as there are a fair amount of connection points, and not really any components to fry. Switches and jacks are typically a bit more heat resilient.

So I'm waiting for mah foist fuzz kit(simple one knob deal from Fuzzboxworld). They already emailed me a step by step tutorial with pics, Step one was adding a 10k resistor to vero board. It said to heat up the part before soldering? Heat it up how?

With your soldering iron. Not the component itself, but rather the joint where you will be applying solder.
