BYOC Large Beaver Triangle etc. + Free Muff Sammiches!

Greetings from the depths of weeklong self-ban HELL!

Just have a few SUPER BURNING (as in Hell) questions that I wanted to toss up hear regarding some Muff-clone "research" I've been doing. I PM'd a few of you about this, but wanted to ask en generale if anyone else has had experience.

I honestly had no idea what a "Triangle" Muff was until yesterday (*it's the knobs!), nor did I really understand the "violet" in Violet Ram's Head (though I did understand the Ram's Head ID). But I got it all now. Anyway, I'm finding, at least according to the demos I've seen, that the Triangle version of the Big Muff is a sound that I've always adored, just didn't know what any of that meant. I've looked a bit at Stomp Under Foot's Tri-Muff (and a few others by him), the BYOC Large Beaver Triangle, and a newer one by Basic Audio called the Tri/Ram Muff, which allows you to switch between the Triangle or Ram's Head sound with a toggle switch. I don't give any various shits about the "Gilmour Tone", but that seems to be more of a disease of TGP and Harmony Central... so the Ram's Head isn't as much of a draw for me... though I hear it's got a bit more low end.

Anyway, you gotcher THIS:

At :24, right when the BYOC LBT is clicked on, I LOOOOOOVE that buzzing power chord sound. Real nice. And the soloing sounds really good, too. The BYOC LBT offers a 4-way mids switch, too, with 1) "Normal" scooped mids (basic Muff sound) 2) Flat Mids 3)Boosted Mids 4) Tone Bypass, which all apparently sound really nice.

Then, you gotcher THIS:

This thing just came out this week as far as public ordering, I think, and it seems to have a lot of interesting features as well. You can go from Ram to Tri and back, and it also has a basic mids knob that goes from super-scooped to normal to boosted and a lot in between. I guess you could call it more of a DAYLUX because it's got the Tri/Ram toggle, but again... not sure how much I'd really even use the Ram's Head. Plus the pedal is, excuse me, a bit ugly. :whateva:

The Stomp Under Foot Tri-Muff only has a short 40 second clip, though it does sound pretty alright. This pedal does not offer any kind of mids adjustment.

I'm not interested in building a BYOC kit; I'd just order one pre-assembled, which would be $135. The Tri/Ram is $210, and the SUF is $150. Now, LOGICALLY and SENSIBLY I should go for the BYOC, as it's the cheapest and, although the sound quality of that demo is sub-par, I think I like the sound of that one the best. YES I just answered my own question, thus rendering this thread useless.

BUT, being a good little fuzz lad, I figured I'd ask if any of you have really liked your BYOC kits, what you think about the Triangle v. Ram's Head versions, and if any of you have tried the SUF or earlier models of the Basic Audio stuff. AND kinda most importantly if you have the BYOC with the 4-way toggle, how well does it work for you, and/or do you find it limiting, possibly preferring the sweepable mids knob on the B.A. Tri/Ram?

:why: :why: :why:

Yer pal,

I've built quite a few Muffs over the past couple years, including a BYOC and GGG kit (one each). And now I have to build another one, because I just trade my last one (and favorite so far) to Ryan for a RRR. :)

I think any of the options you mentioned are going to sound just fine. But I think the BYOC has the most tonal options overall. John (Basic Audio) does great work, so you really can't go wrong with him, either. :thumb:

One of the biggest differences between a Tri and Ram is the input resistor. On the Ram, it's a much lower value, which means more signal from your guitar hits the first transistor (meaning a little bit more dirt). On the other hand, the Ram has a bit more low-end clipping going on. Honestly, I think the best option is to set up the circuit for Ram's Head and then have a toggle (or even better, a pot) control the input resistor value. I'd volunteer to build you one myself, but I'm completely tied up until about the end of March. I can recommend an excellent builder with loads of Muff experience if you want. Just let me know.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that pedal is ugly.

I don't know.... I emailed the Canadian distributor about ordering a few BYOC pedals like a month ago and got no reply, even though I was asking about a Muff, superfuzz clone and a phaser...... well whatever buddy I guess I won't send you my money........

I didn't know that. Interesting. I'll consider that and maybe hit you back later. I'm in no rush to get one of these, as there are a million different VIRGINS and I wanna get the right one.

@retinal orgy:

It looks like Gear Gas Store has some preassembled ones, so I was just going to order through them. Odd that you didn't get a response... seems like that would have been a big order.

i built a triangle large beaver a LONG time ago and it was my main fuzz for a long time. my only real(ly incredibly stupid) gripe with it is the rotary switch. i just don't like :idk:

Could you elaborate slightly on what you don't like about it? Do you mean the four different settings, or how it affects the sound, or the aesthetic of it?

That is the main thing for me in debating my choice... BYOC mids 4-way rotary, B.A. Tri/Ram mids knob, or SUF no mids adjustment.

Normally I don't like rotary switches on pedals, as they seem "limiting", but the BYOC LBT sounded the best to me, and culturejam seems to think that it would provide the widest range of sounds.

the knobs are so close together i almost always fucked up my setting while trying to turn the rotary. not really a big deal most of the time but once during a show IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT i fucking blasted shit way louder than i meant to cause i switched the eq on the rotary

are you using mushrooms as switches?

and basic audio stuff is awesome. probably the best boutique build quality out there.

I'm glad you started this thread, I've been really jonesing for a Muff clone lately. Leaning towards the Beaver Triangle and the Basic Audio Foxey Lady (I know I know, it's not technically a Muff. STFU.)

I also really like the GRM from Stomp Under Foot, but I gotta have a mids knob or at least a switch to bump it to flat.

Yeah, there's a bit of Muff clone info on ILF, but not anything very specific. The size of the damn thing actually has a lot to do with what I'm looking for... otherwise I MIGHT have just bought another NYC Muff. It's hard to go back to those now, though, with all of the "boutique" knowledge that I now have, compared to when I had them. I've owned two NYCs, a Little Big Muff, and a Sovtek Green Muff (my first pedal!). I actually preferred the NYC, but the build and sound quality were different on both, and the Little Big Muff shouldn't even be allowed to be called a Muff.

BUT YEAH. These three (BYOC, BA, SUF) are the ones that most intrigue me, and while I think the SUF ones look the nicest, I'm most likely going to get a BYOC Triangle pre-assembled for the price and sound. I like the size of it, too. PLUS:

The Triforce is going on it to remind me of its cloned heritage. Boo yah.

Anyway... yeah, I like most to all of the stuff I've acquired in the last year (I joined ILF in March 2010), but the Big Muff just has this wonderful special unique quality to it that is a joy to stomp on and blast.

Biff,

Last night I ordered a BYOC Triangle Large Beaver from Gear Gas Store. They build them in house in a few days and ship them out.

I'll let you know WAZZOFF when I get it!
