Trent Reznor sound question

Hey everyone in Fuzz land. I have been obsessing for a few hours after reading a thread on Talkbass that linked this video.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I've been going nuts looking at different effects pedals.

I discovered Metasonix Pedals (obviously not used in this video but Reznor does use them and used them in How To Destroy Angels according to Mexasonix website), Prescription Electronics Depth Charge (which I read somewhere that he used or uses?), also read somewhere that he uses a Woolly Mammoth on occasion.

So I'm searching for two things I suppose. A bit crusher that can achieve some of the insane NIN stuff and a fuzz that can cover the sound of what's in the video. I really am horny for the Metasonix Butt Probe, but holy fuck they're expensive! So what are some alternatives? I had WMD Geiger Counter but all that fucking thing did was give me a head ache.

Suggestions???

Bitcrush is a little hard to find for just guitar... Alesis Bitrman is good but rare and expensive, Oto Machine Biscuit is what I want but it's $600... El ban just sold the super awesome Frostwave Sonic Alienator... Can you use modular synth stuff ? cause that would be easier to find... Check for Charlie Clouser or Alessandro Cortini cause I know those guys did a lot of the sound design and keyboard work... Trent really doesn't make much any more... The Kaoss Pad3 has some good grain shifting bit crushing fuzz effects on it... I'll think of more...

I watched a demo of that Oto today as well. It sounds fucking amazing! But you're right on the 600. Ouch. It's not that I wouldn't be willing to pay that much, but I'd have to save for awhile. Looks like the Alesis Bitrman is discontinued. So that's going be hard to find. Hmmm...I don't know much about Modular Synths. I'll have to google that and see what I come up with.

Malekko will come out with an Omnicron bit crush pedal, I guess that wouldn't be over $200

Trent uses a TON of shit. I was lucky to nab a couple of pieces of gear when they had those eBay auctions last year (some going on now, too), but none of the super good stuff. I know he's got a Devi Ever Improbability Drive, Synth Mangler and Robin Finck uses a Bit.

Actually, I just found a pic. Up front and center is the Sonic Alienator, I also see Line 6 modelers of every flavor, Metasonix, Zvex, Lovetone, Boss, and way more. Would be fun to try to identify all of those.

Good luck with your quest! Hope this helps.

Check Analogue Haven for modular stuff and pedals... Also NoiseFx gets Bitrmans and they just hooked me up with the Dinosaur Fuzz that can cop that sound... Check Mountain King pedals... Jero has the Megalith and it can easily do that sound... :thumb:

Where did that pic come from????????????????

Thanks for the info guys! I'm looking at analoguehaven right now and the 4ms seem very interesting to me. I looked at the modular synthesizers and I'm not quite sure how use those because I don't have any other type of interface or sound boards. Sigh. Pedals must be the way for now.

for the last few NIN records he used a lot of custom Death by Audio pedals.
he also uses the Prescription Electronics Experience fuzz quite a bit.
on that particular track I'm not sure, but it could definitely be something from DBA.

yeah, i mean no offence, but if you are going to have to save up for a biscuit (awesome, want one myself) then you will be saving longer to get a modular setup to do anywhere near the same thing. modular is deep and wide, but it is not a cheap means of doing anything.

if you are interested in bit crushers / reducers, also check the wmd geiger counter and gc civilian issue. lots of power in those little boxes.

in case of the metasonix stuff:
Look for the TM-7 Scrotum Smasher used on ebay. The Butt Probe is good but not that flexible as the TM-7. And probably you get the scrotum smasher also a lot cheaper than the butt probe. But Trent also used the Agonizer. But very hard to find and always pricey... (and does not have so much brutal low end as the TM-7)
