Heh. I'm guessing that either Mssr. Sp. Ritual either has very strong ALL-CAPS opinions (IMAGINE THAT!!!!) about GBV, or he's been traumatized by the polarizing fanboy arguments that surround Pollard & Co.s recorded work.
I love GBV, but sadly more as singles than complete albums... I could give you a list of my favorite songs, but I don't know if that'd be the kind of pointer you're looking for...

i've meant to try seriously listening guided by voices on many occasions. i bought something of theirs a while ago but pretty much only because the art was cool. it had this wheel on the side that you spun and it changed the eyes on the cover.

i will be following this thread.

THERE WILL BE NO SHUTTING DOWN FROM YOU. I WILL START IT RIGHT BACK UP AGAIN.
All right there, Mr. Ritual. I was gonna let this lie, but you just called down THE THUNDER!

(My Kind of Soldier is probably my favoritest GBV song ever)

The thing about GBV is that Robert Pollard has virtually no internal editor. He seems to record and release almost everything he writes. The result is a total mishmash, from lo-fi indiepop, to pure powerpop, to weird proto-prog/postpunky rambling. Which of course results in absolutely NOBODY being able to agree on GBV. So the best question isn't necessarily "where should I go from here" as much as it is "which side of GBV are you digging, because each album will probably have varying degrees of it."
Oh, and the live shows are legendary. I managed to catch them once - they played for two hours, drinking nonstop the whole time, and they didn't miss a beat (until the last song of the encore, at which point they were practically falling over).

there are good-to-great songs on every album, but I don't feel like any album is great all the way through. I wouldn't have any idea what album to recommend to anyone.

everywhere.
that is where you go, exactly because there are good to great songs on every album. they're the most consistantly inconsistant band out there.

<- i was at this one. totally kickass concert. like holy shit.
the best thing about guided by voices is seeing the gold through the rust. because when you do, you forget the rust was ever there.

you are all wrong. there is a very specific way to get into guided by voices. you start with bee thousand and then you move on to alien lanes or vampire on titus, then propeller, then your done. SIMPLE

Alien Lanes,Mag Earwig. Saw 'em in Atlantar with very mediocre Elf Power (zzzzz....). Pollard was drunk and doin' the Roger Daltrey with his mic. People in the crowd wwere buying him beers, and he never missed a note. Here's a few from either album:
