looking for a new bass

i've been thinking of a mustang bass, p bass, or some sort of viola/violin bass.

any suggestions? i like fat mellow tonez. i currently play a fender zone. i've got some olllld flats on it and i dig the sound for the most part, but i hate the active pickups.

even though that list is 2/3s fender, i am in fact open to non fender suggestions.

You could always just replace the active pickups with passive ones. Or wire them passively if the bass has an onboard preamp. It would be cheaper than getting an entirely new bass.

The mustang and violin basses are both shortscale, so that might be cool though...

that's a good idea! i'll probably do that if i don't end up buying a new bass.

I'd say a Hohner violinbass, or perhaps a Gibson Eb-0?

I checked this out in a band rehearsal and found it to be very sexy with roar!

DONT get a violin bass. Yuck.

Mustang bass variants are super sexy. Get a Musicmaster and we can be buddies.

I would say Precision Bass, or Squier Jaguar Bass:)

Mellow-sounding bass, Mustang-esque shape and decent price? The Squier Bronco bass. I dunno if it's still an in-production model, but in 2005, you could buy one for $200. I've got one here that I'm doing a set up/neck repair on for somebody and I've been playing it... it's definitely a decent guitar, one pickup with a Mustang-like pickup cover, short scale, nice and thumpy sounding. Could make a decent Reggae bass but wouldn't make a great Funk bass.

You realise them maples are no tlikely to turn out as woolly-bassy-low-end as the mahagonies? Oompah-oompah-dum-deedum.

On the other hand, nothing beats a maple body + a maple neck in banging some treble nails into listeners heads. Dang-dang-rang'a-dang-kill-kill-kill!
