But seriously, it is rad. I had never played a green muff so I didn't really know what to expect with the Hoof. The secret is really all in the shift knob. Holy crap that knob changes EVERYTHING. Still kind of figuring it out; if a pedal has more than two knobs I get confused quickly.

The octave is nice, my G&L strat doesn't have normal tone controls, so I have to play with those a little more to get the more classic octave sounds.

With both the tone reaper and hoof on at the same time, it can be gain overload and it sounds like things are melting. if that's not what you're going for, roll back the volume knob to 8 or 9 and voila, things clear up magnificently and it sounds amazing.

The amp is having a huge effect on the type of sound you're getting out of the pedal. I get the same type of sound when I run my Tone Reaper into my silverface Fender. I get very different results when I run it into my Blues Jr, a darker-sounding amp. The raspiness changes to a really full, harmonically-rich fuzz that's what you expect from a Tonebender-type circuit (think early Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Mick Ronson). There must be something about the preamps in 70's Fenders that causes this. If you haven't tried the pedal with other amps, it's worth trying. The difference can be huge. I can't say for certain that it will be true for the Hoof side of the pedal, because I don't have one of those, but it's been true for all the other fuzzes I currently have (germanium sunface, tusk, zap machine, dream crusher, Hudson Stroll On).

Jamie must have tested all these through a variety of amps, maybe he'll give us his opinion.

In any case, In my experience a lot of 70's fender amps have a really nasty high end bit. The deluxe reverb reissue is the main amp I use to design and test pedals. I clipped the input cap, replaced the power tubes with vintage RCA's, new JJ's in the preamp section and replaced the speaker with a tone tubby hemp cone speaker. I alternate between both channels. IMO the DRRI is one of the worst sounding amps ever for fuzz and other high gain pedals I figure if I can get it to sound good there, it'll sound good on anything. The other amps that we use to test pedals are a heavily modded '71 bassman and avatar 2x12 with a WGS Reaper and et65 speaker combo, a musican man 120 with a band master 2x12 cab (same speakers as the avatar), marshall jtm45 and 50w plexi with a park 4x12 cab and a little 1x12 solid state Conn combo amp. I tend to lean toward the darker side of things when I set an amp up. On my marshalls I roll the presence almost all the way off and the treble back to about 3, mids and bass about 7 (not in "clock terms") into the high set low and jumped to the normal set high. Fenders are almost always set with the treble and bass at 6 and volume to whatever I feel like. That said, I usually change all these settings all the time. I have a really particular taste when it comes to dirt so I always try to plan for the worst possible setting on any amp being used
