... don't let your bullshit get in the way of making that shit happen for realz.

I feel like I know so many incredibly talented artists who's personal demons ultimately cripple them from really pushing forward with their art.

USE THAT ENERGY TO MAKE SHIT HAPPEN.

Don't get lost in the depression and inevitable distraction... figure out a way to channel that power back into the art, because you totally fucking deserve to be heard, regardless of what you think about yourself, or you feel others think.

Sorry... have just been listening to a lot of brilliant music from a lot of people who deserve better, and at the end of the day, you're really only battling yourself, ya know?

well-said, Devi.
Being a recent graduate of the recording program, I have gotten attuned to noticing 'talent', and I've seen and heard ALOT of people out there with no apparent aspirations for getting their music heard...who I wish would just come to me and let me record them! :shameless self-promotion: :hello:

Thank you for posting this Devi

I have for years let depression/bad relationships and other vices pull me way from being a bass player that I could have been as apposed today.

I spent 2010 way too depressed and fought my way through it, now that my life is back together and my love of playing music ever stronger, I am going to make sure that in 2011 I make my first of what I hope to be many marks in playing.

Agreed dude. I've spent far too much time in the past letting bullshit get in the way of music, and only recently have I actually been able to turn that around and use that negativity as a catalyst to create, whether it be writing songs, recording, etc. It's unfortunate seeing some of my friends succumbing to various negative influences, thus destroying their drive to pursue something they've loved for so long, something that our friendships began from. It definitely helps to know that you aren't the only one dealing with whatever it is you're battling. Soooo thanks for the encouragement is what I'm getting at I guess .

I've had enough of mindless jamming and dicking around with friends. Time to, as you put it, make shit happen. In the words of Flight of the Conchords, It's business time.

First practice with new collaboration/band is Friday. Unfortunately, I'm stuck on drums until we find another drummer.

Yeah, nothing worth the pursuit comes without problems to solve. And some ask for sacrifices, even Yourself. :( If it's too hard for You, maybe it's time to realise the goal wasn't worth much effort in the first place? Just fight it harder. IF it's the right action for You. Are Your dreams really Your dreams?

[edit., cleared my voice]
:wizard: I don't mean to steal Your thunder BUT to give You a proper IRL zen boost  to kick off the jams the right way for You.

I've seen many gifted artists go sour and flush down their acts because they do shit for just the wrong motives. Your dreams? Either the guys have pushed it to the limits and ruined it for themselves because they have really been doing it for someone else; or they have not, stubborn as they come, realised they have fought the hardships really just to reassure themselves - instead of simply reconsidering the right action in the right situation and taking a detour.

Being ruthlessly, hurtfully true to oneself and to ones true will is the key. And the way to test oneself is by questioning the ego and the motives on daily bases. And it's likely to come with occasional meltdowns so
 go meditate, go fishing, go take psychoanalysis  WHATEVER it is that it takes to make You familiar with Your self and Your motives.
