My friend has a Peavey Classic 30, and the amp literally has the harshest distortion channel ever. SO MUCH FUCKING HIGHS. So, we're now wondering if there's an OD pedal that would smooth out some of those highs. And, since that's not ridiculous fuzz, it falls out of my area of expertise. Therefore, I come to you, oh wise ILF, for solutions. Thoughts?

The singing tree did a good job at taming my highs.

The Guv'nor has a nice EQ that you could probably use to tweak it.

It sure did that for me when I tested it out...really smooth and natural.

I almost bought that amp but I didn't like the distortion. it just wasnt my thing really. I just like the sound of marshalls orange sometimes ac30. peavy tube distortion sounds like a distortion pedal i would never buy. you really got ask yourself if its the highs or the voicing of the amp. I think its the amp but if your worried about highs just roll your tone knob down. if you get a good distortion pedal you can run the amp clean.

Tubescreamer with tone rolled off? Works fine for me. That is on bass, though, so don't hold me to it.

So you want something to smooth out the distortion channel? Or do you want something to give you OD on the clean channel? I'm guessing you've already played around with the EQ on the amp...

My two recommendations would be either a Timmy or a DBA Interstellar Overdriver. The treble control on the Timmy serves as a high cut, which might help get rid of some of the harshness. I thought the DBA IOD was very dark, kind of like it threw a blanket over my sound, which I didn't like at all, but it might work in this situation. Also, maybe it was just my rig that made it sound like that, because I've read a lot of glowing reviews about it.

At the end of the day, I don't think a pedal can fix an amp's problems. From the sound of it, I would probably get a nice OD pedal to use on the clean channel.

The OD pedal into the clean channel was my original suggestion, so we'll probably just go with that. The amp's eq doesn't help with the highs, even clean. So, umm, more suggestions, folks! I like input.

I've been using the White Light OD for this for a long time now. The Weight knob is super useful to dial in how heavy an OD you want. With the Weight at noon, it can be a little bright, but once you start cranking it to the right you can get a nice heavy OD sound.

Have we asked what kinda guitar, other pedals, style of music, room acoustics, expectations? I'm lookin at the manual and it seems to me it could be made to be mellow and not so harsh but alot depends on other factors?

With every guitar and every use we've tried it with, it's just been retarded briiiiight. No clue what the fuck.

Exactly what I was going to say, except I do use it with a guitar. I find it gets tight, crunchy punkish tones(think The Hives) on bridge pup and sweet, crisp bluesy tones on neck pup. It's no dirty fuzz-from-hell, but it sounds like it's probably what you're looking for.

the Marshall Guvnor Plus will squish that distortion channel like a steamroller with its 4-band EQ, and its much-disliked treble cut will do wonders for that nasty, fizzy half-a-12AX7 amp dirt-channel sound if you leave the Guvnor Plus' C22 alone. and they're really, really cheap used.

i'd also try a different tube in the slot that gets used as the dirt channel driver--probably the last preamp tube--but that's a whole different can of worms.

stray thought: it might also help to have the power tubes biased.

Has he had the amp checked out? I have a Classic 30, it's a little bright but can be dialed out. Was way too bright and harsh when I bought it, turned out a tube and a capacitor were going bad.

I use a DBA IO Supreme btw
