Mosrite or proper clone wanted

Being the surf nut that I am, I really want a Ventures model Mosrite, but 2-5 grand is a bit steep! I've heard that new Mosrites are as good, if not better than the originals. I've also read that Hallmarks rate the same and Eastwoods are cool, but are nothing like Mosrites, save for the shape. As far as custom goes, I could wind up with something really badass that has the sweet look at possibly a fraction of the cost, if I play my cards right.
It's a tough call. Anybody know of anything good and cheap, or someone who makes a clone of the body and neck? If it's looking like Eastwood is the route to take, I'll probably shell out a few more bucks and get a Los Straitjackets model Galaxie 4 from DiPinto... Anyone play one of those?

I would look for an old Univox before buying the eastwood

was not impressed with many of their guitars/basses.

when fullerton went out of buisness musicians friend had green ones for $200. that was 5 years ago. pawn shops have them for $100. not bad chineese made. like a mexi strat. its usable once you swap pups. didn't ed roman buy the license for mosrite? anyway fuk him. he has lost so many lawsuits for taking large deposits on custom guitars and not even building your guitar. also builds counterfeits of stuff he takes for repairs trades consignment etc... he has kirt cobains guitar. one of two made. you can buy it but its fake and he has 100 of em.

have you looked into Eastwood Guitars? they make several Mosrite clones.
I've never tried one, but they look pretty solid...made in Korea, IIRC

Id deffo look for an old Univox Hi-Flier...also branded as Aria, Unicord, Raven, PAN, DIA etc...very nice clones, high quality and sound great. Phase 1 and 2 models have the p90's, and phase 3 and 4 have humbuckers. Really lightweight, big sound, reliable, and should set you back around 3-400 in the US, or anywhere for that matter.
