... an accordion kicks serious ass.
For anyone interested in that dark intersection between Waits, Zorn and postpunk, I give you Providence, RI's one and only certified accordion god, Alec K. Redfearn (& The Seizures). Alec is not messing around, and never has.

I like to think that it's just that Providence is awesome. But I may be biased.

Yeah I'd say. I wish I was there for that Fort Thunder ruckus...does the AS220 still happen?

Yeah, Fort Thunder was something, man. I didn't go enough while it was here, but I got to witness a bit of the amazing insanity. AS220 is indeed still going strong... they've grown, expanded, even started up an MIT Fab Lab for the DIY-ers who aren't afraid of robotics and the like. AS220 and the Ft. Thunder-nurtured arts scene are definitely a large part of what's made Providence a great place. Also, just great strong local people like Alec, Guy Benoit (who filmed that video, and used to be the frontman for Thee Hydrogen Terrors), and Mark from 75 or Less records (who's been tirelessly releasing small-run local albums for years now) - without people like them, AS220 wouldn't have anyone to book!
Of course, there is a flipside - we've still got plenty of scenesterism, jaded clubs that won't book enough local bands, people that won't get out to enough local shows, and all the usual bullshit. But that's pretty much the same anywhere, I think...
