hiwatt question

Post by kylecallert »

i'm about to buy a 70's era hiwatt custom 100 that's modified with "3-5AR4 tubes and transformer making power output approx. 115 watts when bench tested" anyone have any idea with this will do to the sound?

How much is it? It'll probably sound rad, but that's sure not original.

Woah.
That's pretty cheap.
Most 70s Hiwatt heads go on the toronto craigslist for something like $2000 - $3000.
If you like how it sounds go for it.

And if you don't like it, we have a B/S/T section just around the corner.

It is just a rectifier tube mod. Try a Mesa rectifer and switch at the back the rectifiers on and off and you will hear the effect:
rectifier tubes: a little bit more loose and not so focused, i would say the power amp is more "breathing"
without rectifier tubes (and solid state rectifiers): tighter

you can always get 5ar4 substitutes as solid state (e.g. at weber vst) to replace it

for me it sounds like a silly idea to mod this amp with rectifier tubes. that may cause the low price though.

Hmm I’d buy it just because.

I see they used 3 GZ34/5ar4s to bring the sag back up close to ss levels.

Still a loud clean all tube beast.
