Rickenbacker 330: Jetglo or Fireglo?

After having to sell my jetglo 330 a few years ago I never thought I'd have a chance to own another. I always thought it was the perfect guitar for me, and now I have the money saved up for a used one! I've always preferred the Jetglo, but I've been warming up to the Fireglo finish. If I were Guy Picciotto, I'd have both, but I'm not him. Just out of curiosity, what do ya'll think? I always thought the Montezuma Brown was an awesome finish, but Ric only did it for a couple years, so the likely-hood of finding one (let alone an affordable one) is zip I'm sure. Also, anyone know if you can play the 12 string models with just 6 strings without it feeling awkward?

as a pathetic slut of an early REM fan i'd have to go for the black, though i really prefer the natural finish on a 330. i've never tried playing a 12-string Rick with 6 strings. a lot of people complain that the fingerboards on 12-string Ricks are too narrow, so it might work. the weight of the additional tuners might be a balance/headstock weight issue; you'd have to try one out to be certain.

And, for some reason, my iPhone double posted my previous comment. So, lemme also chime in on this one that it's Against Me! approved too.

I'd say you can't go wrong with either one. But I'm always drawn to black guitars. The Jetglo gives more of a hard edge look and the white really pops, no missing that distinctive white guard and headstock plate. That being said I love my Fireglo 360/12v64, got it in the late 80s. What helped sell me was the color and beautiful woodgrain peeking through.

Funny you mention playing a 12 as a 6 cause that's what I did. Loved the 12 string jangle but wanted more versatility (was also a bit of a challenge playing as a 12 string with my sausage fingers, but not impossible) so I just removed the 2nd strings. Only issue I had was the reduced tension caused the action to increase, I just lowered the bridge a bit and all was good. I guess theoretically my 6 strings are positioned slightly "off" since they allowed room for 2 of each but I never had a problem playing it. You can probably find some good info over at the Ric board, but it may be blasphemous to them, I dunno. I've had it as a 6 for over 15 years now but actually just bought a new set of strings to play it as a 12 for a change.

I always found that Jet was much easier to read on the EL train than Ebony.
