So, I found a chorus pedal at a friend's house, and fooling around with that made me realize that I've never used any modulation on my board. And, now, of course, I want to. So, reccommend me some interesting stuff, folks! Flangers, phasers, whatever! I'm all ears.

Welcome aboard my friend. Are you looking for more knob twiddler kinda stuff, or set-it and forget-it live-on-your-board kinda stuff?

For tweaking, I love the Moogerfoogers. And you can use the LFO's and clocks in the Phaser, Ring Mod and MuRF's to modulate any parameter on any of the other pedals. Same with the envelope on the LowPass filter. So you could sweep the carrier tone on the ring mod with the LFO on the phaser. Or you could have the delay time on the analog delay go up and down with the envelope on your picking from the low pass filter. Etc. etc. Same applies for the Lightfoot Labs Goatkeeper.

I don't have much experience with the non-CV enabled stuff, but I do love the Mid-Fi Pitch Pirate and Clarinot, the EHX Small Clone, Ross Flangers and a few others. So much fun when you add a little warble and shimmy into the mix.

But back on track:

I think Chorus is probably the easiest to get the hang of. It is relatively easy to set a chorus so that it doesn't annoy. Well, at least most Chori have that possibility. I think it's just a matter of trying, chorus is most like fuzz in that everyone has an opinion, all opinions differ extremely and I am right. I had a Seppuku Mind Warp and that was amazing. I think relatively cheap and pretty similar is the BBE Mind Bender but I never tried that one.

I love my EQD Grand Orbiter and the Sea Machine is pretty much on top of my want list because of that and because of it's features. +1 on Moogerfoogers.

the deluxe electric mistress is one of the if not the best flanger ever produced and, thanks to EHX making a cubic ass ton of them, they can be had for pretty cheap on the bay.

I'm really more down for the crazy, ridiculous stuff, btw. Is there anything sorta like a flanger hoax but...smaller?

In terms of classics there is:
Phaser - MXR Phase 90, Maestro phaser
Chorus - Boss Oc-2, TC elctronic chorus
Flanger - honestly don't know, I really like the MXR flanger or the Maestro

Phase 90 is the "it" phaser, although it sin' true bypass - I've got one and it isn't that bad (int erms of the non true bypass)

Believe me, there is nothing like the Flanger Hoax. I LERVE the hoax. I can't see this thing ever leaving me. Thru-zero flanging plus dual phasers? Yes sir.

The only other thing that is still in production that can do real through-zero flanging in a smaller package is the Strymon Orbit, which is pretty pricey. Also, the EHX Stereo Electric Mistress can get pretty damn crazy when you crank the flanger depth. It really sounds like ball bearing rolling down a drain pipe. Plus, it has the filter matrix where you can freeze the flange, it gives you ring-mod-y bell tones. Pretty damn cool.

For phasers, the craziest one I can think of is the Toadworks Phantasm. I had a lot of fun with the EHX Stereo Polyphase as well. My current phaser is an old Morley deluxe phaser from about 30 years ago (6-stage optical, resonant as hell)

For chorus, I tend to like the more subtle stuff. My favorite chorus is the old Boss DC-2, which is a very static, icy sound without a ton of movement.

There's other modulation types too, like tremolo, vibrato, ring modulation, filters, etc.

I can go on all night

Phaser > All

followed by tremolo
then ringmod
then chorus
then flanger.

I just don't use flangers that often so don't listen to me. The stereo mistress is fucking insane though.
