MXR M-80 vs VT Deluxe?

Post by behndy »

hey y'all.

my VT Deluxe takes up too much room since i don't ever use more than the one save spot. very nice DI, good clean tone, but i don't really dig on it's distortion that much.

anybody use that and the MXR M-80? thoughts?

also interested in maybe a small preamp/DI pedal that has a nice clean tone and a complementary OD pedal.

for overdriven stuff looking for a nice, grindy, almost pick breaking up tone.

murrrrrrrr?

What is this, TB?

Also, I have nothing useful to contribute to this thread. Maybe just get a regular vt and have it modded with an xlr out?

Oh wait, I forgot, get a singing tree for some rad OD toanz.

lol. see, i DID post this on TB too, and that was one of the suggestions. problems with that are two-fold....

01) already gave my OG VT to a friend
02) don't really dig on the VT's distortion that much

thank you for the admittedly not so useful contribution though. you are a man among men and a lemur among gerbils. whatever the fuck that means.

I have an M80 and find the distortion to be kind of generic/anemic sounding. I put a pharaoh fuzz in front and just use the m80 as an eq direct box.

I saw this picture of Hendrix, all he used was a wah.... And not even the Jim Dunlop Jimi Hedrix wah, just some old thing.....
Jimi didn't realise the horrible tone suck we had to listen to every time he used that wah.

thanks BaxAnd'L!

i have a friend bringing one over on Thursday to try out. i'll keep that in mind. i have tons of fuzz, i was just curious if it did a good mostly clean, slightly break up distortion. how do you like the clean eq section? do you run it as your only preamp with a poweramp or into a full head?

thanks!

Have you considered the Sansamp Bass Driver DI? It looks pretty close to what you're after, in my opinion anyway.
*Edit* It doesn't have a mids knob though. Does tht matter at all?"

i have a Bass Driver DI, and it's ok. the lack of a mids knob isn't HUGE, they just have a fixed mids that you have to adjust the bass and treble knobs too.

i just pulled the trigger on a Radial BassBones DI, and i picked up a Dirty Little Secret to try out for the OD. still gonna spend some time with the M-80 tomorrow, but i think i'm going to actually go in the separate preamp/OD combo.

thanks!

I have heard VERY good things about the Tronographic Rusty Box. I have not ever used one but I hear good things about it around here.

Ah, yeah...good point...if Eric was still alive he'd mention that one for sure. The power supply issue with it sure sounds like fun though.

HELL YES! Rusty Box rules. I use it into a power amp for shittons of win.

Also, what power supply issue? They provide one. And, one time, mine broke, so they sent me another one at their cost. Tronographic cannot possibly rule more.

Well, not so much as issue as an inconvenience for a lot of people. The Rusty box isn't friendly with most peoples board power supplies. Not good for the wall wart phobic of us.

Sorry for not getting back sooner. It will do a mostly clean, slightly break up distorion pretty well for you. The EQ section is pretty good. I was using it into my Genz Benz Shuttle 6 when I was recording all my band's practices. I haven't used it yet with my Electric amp that I'm now using for bass.

Well, okay. I'm fine with it though. So, as a result, I get the raddness of the pedal.
