One of my friends maintains that the greatest tone he had ever heard at a show went Ric 330->boss ds-1->palomino. And we both agree that makes no goddamned sense. So, maybe they're alright?

I think there are some potentially nice Crate amps out there so I won't discount them totally, but...

The two I have experience with live up to their name and have been footrests/tables/coasters/garage dwellers for far longer than they have been played :erm:

Maybe if you can get one on the cheap or something though it would be worth it. If it's a step up and a good deal then why not? Reading the Innernets all day makes it difficult to not instantly judge things based on the opinions that other people are freely and constantly shouting. If you've never played a Crate amp but have seen 1,000 people on Youtube writing "LOL NICE AMP IF UR A DICKBUTT I GUESS LOL"
"50 POUND PAPERWEIGHT"
"GYUS I JUST BOUTHGHT CRRATE AMP WHAT IS DOING 'STANDBY' SWITCH?!!?"
"FUCKING AMERICANS EUROPEAN UNION IS SUPERIOR"
"JEWS DID 9/11"
"CRATEISSHITCRATEISSHITCRATEISSHITCRATEISSHITCRATEISSHITCRATEISSHIT"

that kind of stuff, you might shy away from them without even giving them a shot. Maybe it earns that reputation, but uhhh

I'm kinda tired and have re-read this post about 5 times so I guess the lesson is that people on Youtube are fucking idiots and it makes me anxious when I'm in a store and I think about how the person right next to me could be a Youtube commenter. They're subhuman, even lower than people who buy pictures of feet on Craigslist. Anyway you probably get the gist of this post.

I've heard decent sounds out of them for demos and such, but in person I thought they sounded like crap. :idk:

In my opinion, you can definitely find something better.

No. My amps are 1/2w and they're not tube - clearly they aren't what the OP is looking for, and even if they were, I'm not the type that goes thread to thread plugging my own products. Despite being a builder, I do try to contribute here on ILF without it being a sales pitch. :hello:

I was more suggesting that he look in a similar price range. Unless he's getting an amazing deal on the Palomino, there are likely better alternatives out there for a small tube combo with better tone. :idk:

I have a Crate V30 head and cab (same amp but black trim, not that cream colour) - I love it. It runs pretty hot, but I've never had a problem other than a noisy tube which was an easy fix. Sweet fat cleans, overdrive channel is also nice but I prefer to mess around with dirt pedals.

Only thing I can fault is that the knobs are hard to read.

I've got a regular v50(palominos are mojofied V series amps)...really cheap, great big fendery cleans, very pedal friendly. Garbage OD channel, but that's what fuzz/od pedlulz are for.
