so i recently got promoted at my wonderful grocery store job, which means that now i can afford new gear, which is always a plus. anyways i plan on replacing my shitty marshall solid state combo with a tube amp. i'm thinking fender hot rod series or maybe something else. but here comes the real dilemma. do i buy an M9, or just buy a bunch of awesome pedals? any advice would be great, because i'm at a standstill on whether or not to pull the trigger on the M9 or not.

The m9 really shines at delays/verbs, and can do some super wacked out stuff with the filters.
The dirt/fuzz selections are pretty good, but they didn't exactly make me want to throw out my algal bloom/dream crusher/musket, ya know?

Get the m9, a tube amp, and maybe a bit further down the road a few extra fuzzes for toan

For pedals so far, I've got an Algal Bloom which i love to death, a DD-7 which gets the job done, a boss tuner because why not, and a boss super chorus because it was $15 and while the dd-7 is nice, i desperately want the particle verb from the M9...

If you like the sound of it and the sounds it gets then sure. Personally I don't care for line6 soundwise and I don't need what the things do

Yea I would say go for the m9 also. A lot of people prefer its delays and reverbs and the modulation and distortions are not bad plus they will give you a good idea of different overdrive types.

This +10,000,000,000,092!!!! I agree with this completely! I have an M9, and it is awesome for delays and reverbs. The modulation are really, really good too! It also has an Ooh Wah and Goatkeeper style effect. Everything can be sync'ed to the tap tempo, and has a built in looper and a tuner. The dirt section isn't amazing, but they also don't suck. Like bronze was saying, it will give you a good idea of what type of od/fuzz/modulation you're into, so you won't waste as much time or money on trying to find your sound. Also, once you get an expression pedal or two you can have a volume pedal and a wah, plus be able to control parameters on other effects.

Honestly, you could get a nice OD / fuzz / the M9 & an expression pedal, and you would have a great little setup. As for amps, I would pass on the Fender Hot Rods. I use to have a 4x10 Hot Rod Deville, and while it was a decent amp, you can find something just as good for the same price or less. How loud do you need to get? Are you playing out, or just at home? If you don't need the volume there are some great amps for 15 watts or less. Even still, a 15 watt amp can hang with a drummer.

I love the m9 for the looper alone, everything else is gravy. My rig now is 3 Fuzzhuggers (Phantom Octave, Algal Bloom, ABsynth), Boss DD5, QTron+, into the M9, with a Mission Engineering expression pedal (nice!). The fuzzes are good, just not as good as any ILF stuff. The octave down fuzz is heavy as shit, but my settings are basically all filters and delays. In fact, I have spent no time with reverbs yet, just the memory man setting and particle verb. That's why I like this box, I don't feel the need to learn it all in 1 day (you can't).

As a comparison, I sold my Memory Man with Hazarai to help fund this and I like everything about the M9 more.

i've got a marshall mg50dfx. gets the job done and it sounds ok, but it's not a tube amp, which is one of my dream buys. thankfully my part time job as a butcher can now pay for that. i played the blackstar 60 watt and it was decent, and i looked at some other stuff but i'm just kinda looking for suggestions now. and i usually play in my bedroom but thats because i can't find anyone who wants to play post rocky/sludgy style music, until recently when i found a drummer. so eventually, it's going to be a gigging amp, but used as a practice amp too.

Step 1. Get Hot Rod Deville/Deluxe
Step 2. replace 1 or 2 speakers with something decent
Step 3. get rid of shit groove tubes.
Step 4 ....

The M9 hands down is a widely vouched for piece of gear on any forum. For 400 bucks you get a lot for your money, and as mentioned before some setups use the M9 for everything other than dirt which most people run into it.

It really boils down to what you want to do with your gear, I love buying each effect because it gives me something to look forward too and I love all of the options out there. However if that was not the case I would have just gotten an M9 and some dwarfcraft fuzz and be done

Does slamming the input of the M9 with fuzz or a heavy boost cause any clipping or weirdness?

well, now that i'm going to get the M9, i could use some amp suggestions i was looking at the fender hot rod series, but maybe someone could point me in a different direction?

What is your budget and how big of an amp are your looking for? A lot of people like the fender hot rod series and they work well if you must have something newer and cheaper. If it doesn't have to be new you can find pretty good deals on silver face fenders and they will sound better than the hot rod. I would also recommend look at the Mesa Boogie DC-5 as a cheap great sounding amp. A lot of clean headroom and a good distortion channel.

well i have a 50 watt marshall dfx 1x12 right now. i definitely want to go tube, and right now my budget is between 500-1000, maybe a little bit more if i need to, and i'm looking for something around 40-60 watts so i can play some small shows but also have a nice practice amp. AND i'd like to get maybe a 2x12. i havent decided on a combo or head-cab setup yet
