anyone had any experience with using these in a very fuzzed up manner? ( Mudfuzz i'm looking right at YOU )
i remember playing one long long ago when Guild was puttin them out, i thought it had a very interesting sound. fender still makes them and they are fairly cheap....IIRC it had a very uptrighty sound...well a bit plastic too but still interesting.

I've always wanted one.... Actually to build one.... never got to try one with fuzz though... sorry None the less it should be a cool sound, I've run my DB though fuzz and always liked it... That's about all the help I can give

I don't have one, but the couple times I played around on one I just couldn't get used to the strings. I like a lot more tension and those are rubbery and flabby.

It didn't sound too bad though.

Played one once or twice. Meh. It kind of sounds like an upright bass, much like a blender sounds like a chainsaw.

I agree on the strings; any time someone recommends you have some powder on your hands to slide over the rubber strings more easily, it's a problem. It's definitely got that "Whoa! What is that?" vibe to it, but that's about it.

well that settles it.....i'm buying one.

just that fact that others are "meh" means i need it. i like different tones and strange instruments.
the strings are fukking strange for sure but so what?.... i can adapt. fuk i play mando's, uke's baja sexto, baja quintos and banjo from time to time, it's all about opening new tone doors.

blender to chainsaw comparison is a hoot. that comment alone sells me although i think it was supposed to do the opposite.

Actually no, it wasn't. I read a ton of threads about people saying these things sound like upright basses, and the fact is that they don't. They're rubbery strings on a fretless board so there is "some" similarity, but nothing like the full bodied wooden tone that only a giant frame and soundpost can provide for you.

So it was more of a "Don't expect it to be something else; it's what it is" comment. So get one and enjoy it!

On the other hand you can't make a doublebass sound like a 18" scale bass with rubber strings either.

They're kinda farty, kinda dorky (cuz it's so small), and I kinda dig it, but sorta not. Hard to play hard, which is all I do, so not for me.

that's kool. i'm sure i'll dig the fuck out of it too.
i've never read anything on them. i tried one in the 80's and sorta dug it as it was odd and i like odd.
i build/repair/modify guitars for a living and would never expect a 18" scale bass with rubber strings to sound like an actual upright bass and that wasn't my objective.
my objective is just have some kool alternate bass lines/tones and the rubbery slink those provide may be pretty fukkin rad. ya know? i like using things other people will not use and an ashbory through my amp/pedal archive should be explosive.
.............or maybe not....
anyway, i know someone at fender and get good deals so its a no brainer. besides it'll be perfect for my 5 year old to bang around on if nothing else.

Well I borrowed one from a friend to rehearse with.. And it did not sound crap with my bass big muff, octaver and some other effects, so I think you will be good with it..

And I'm okay with that.

I do have a 30" scale bass that sounds close though. I use it for pits where the real estate is very small. One of those that the music director usually says "It's close enough the audience isn't going to know or care."

I have considered getting one from way back when Guild first built them.
Fernandez made a copy, with that funky head stock and body which is the one Fender is based on not the Guild.

Also thinking about a Uke bass and bunches of other stuff, just because it’s out there.

speaking of those U-Basses...I've been kinda thinking about getting one..just as a small, acoustic 'travel bass' or just an around-the-house player..
But it has rubber/plasticized strings, and i was wondering if anybody knows what material these are?, as I happen to be allergic to some rubber products..
