Dr. Scientist The Cleanness uses?

I currently use a single channel Soldano for basically everything, and it's becoming a little tiring rolling back the volume on my guitar, reducing the gain on the amp and raising the master, or switching to the Low Input to clean up the amp.

What I have found quite clever to alleviate this problem, is setting my Lightfoot Labs Goatkeeper as a footswitch-able gain control for the amp - it works surprisingly well. But I obviously can't use the pedal for its original glorious purpose then - tremolonononess. :erm:

So I was wondering, can I use The Cleanness in the same way? Can I put it at the end of my signal chain (or the loop) and reduce the preamp gain of the amp by kicking it in. I want an EQ pedal to do this over a volume-in-a-box because I can add sparkle and clarity to the clean sound (without that it really is too low and muddy) as well as decreasing the gain. Is this possible?

Hey Danny!

You can definitely use a Cleanness for that purpose, that's a big part of why I added the master volume knob... gain reducing. I like to use the Cleanness with my Triple Rectifier distortion channel.. I leave the distortion channel dimed and then use the Cleanness as a lower gain level amp channel by lowering the master volume on the pedal. Gives me a much cleaner crunchy tone and then I kick the Cleanness off to let the amp roar.

You can do this with the Cleanness either in front of your amp or in your loop, whatever works best for you will be fine with the pedal.

PS - Goatkeepers rule!

It sounds like I'm on a winner here.

Do you think I could get it almost clean (obviously depending on the amp and pick-ups, etc.) with The Cleanness. I don't use that much gain. I suppose I should considering the name of the pedal. :poke:

Btw, Ryan, I sent you an email about an idea I had to combine shipping. When you have a free moment, have a gander through it. And the Goatkeeper, along with the Randy's Revenge, are the only two pedals I KNOW I'm keeping.

I love the Randy's Revenge too, really cool pedal!

You can clean up your tone quite a bit with the Cleanness.. it really does depend though... I can't get the Rectifier distortion channel sparkly clean with the pedal but I can reduce the gain a ton. I think with a lot less amp gain you could get to almost clean with the pedal.

PS - We got a dealer request from a store in Dublin.. Dublin Guitar Centre... ever been to that store?

The name doesn't ring a bell, but after looking at it on Google Maps I can't see how I would of missed it when in Dublin.

After a gig, the next morning we would always go for pancakes (it's a tradition we've had for YEARS), and we go that way from the hostel to the pancake shop. So I'm thinking they've changed their name or it's a brand new shop.

Either way, it would be WICKED to have Dr. Scientist pedals there. Another shop in Ireland is a stockist of Devi Ever, Jam Pedals, ZVex, etc. which is a revelation - really!

Cool, thanks! We think it would be really cool to have a dealer in Ireland, we'd be excited about it. Hopefully next year we'll start taking on some new stores, we're still too far behind and too slow.

It'll happen in time, don't worry.

Oh, and I was reading up about Dubin Guitar Centre; it sounds like a very promising store. It is brand new (opened late last year), so that's why I never noticed it. It's a shame it doesn't have a website because apparently the prices are very reasonable and they stock products that few, if any, shops in the entire country stock let alone in Dublin.

If I were to put my pedals anywhere, it would be an 'up-n-coming' store like that. The future seems bright for them. Thanks for the email, btw. I'll answer it tomorrow. I'm very tired at the moment. It sounds perfect, thanks soooooo much!

I can't wait for my Shiva to show up. I'm definitely going to try using the Cleanness to take away some of the gain from my amp. If all goes well it'll be like having a clean, crunch, and high gain channels, and all of those will have the option of a solo boost.

Bogner Shiva?

I'm thinking of completely replacing my Soldano and using The Cleanness as a way to change the sound of my pedals. After seeing Kayzer's demo, I think that is where it might be best used for me personally.

Both of your points are totally what the Cleanness is all about, just making stuff sound different. More or less gain and more or less eq is just handy.

I love that about it. It basically means any pedal I have that doesn't cut very well, cuts too well, or anything like that, can be altered to fit the band and music. Awesome. :yay:

When I first got my scientist I wasn't really sure what it was capable of. I thought it was basically a para EQ pedal. I did use it as that for a while with much success.

Then I became aware of the touchiness of the gain knob that I didn't understand because of the picture only pedal. Then I became aware of how the level knob reacts with the gain knob.

Since then I've been using this pedal as 3 pedals. Either an EQ or a clean boost or a really shape able OD pedal. It is just sweet.

Welcome to the forum, Baxandall! Great to hear you're liking your Cleanness, thanks!

We had a hard time with those picture labels but we had to make a change from all the laborious labeling. I feel like the tone symbols are really intuitive but gain and volume aren't as much... it's like the gain and master volume of an amplifier.

I just got one a few weeks ago out of the HCFX mystery tourbox

I had to trade in my frazz ( it' was the only fair trade I had available), but it's ok because this thing rocks!

While my crunch/lead channels are mid heavy, I like my cleans scooped to all hell...but scoop too much and fuzz sounds like muck.
So I've been stacking the cleanness with fuzz to counter the scoop and inject a gainy-mid boost :thumb:
