getting tricky with a NC jack...?

I'm building a battery-only effect, but I don't want to use a stereo input jack.
any way to use a NC (normally closed) jack as an input jack...that also will turn the battery on/off?
help would be really appreciated!

I'm not sure...connect the battery's negative to the switched lug...jumpered to the ground lug...then when the input jack isn't plugged in, the ground will also run to the input lug...thus breaking ground??
That wouldn't work.

well, probably with some additional circuitry but you most likely don't want to do that, sooooo...
stereo jack or just a switch to break ground/power.

Yeah, stereo is your best bet.

I wanted to plug my mp3 player into the input (using an adapter). it works with a mono jack, but using a stereo jack shorts my mp3 player and turns it off when I plug it in.
