Sonic Youth - Washing Machine-esque fuzz/drive

Hi there....
Looking for a pedal, or combination of pedals that will get me close to that Washing Machine-esque sound.... particularly on songs like Becuz, Washing Machane and of course The Diamond Sea.... I know what they're currently using from their excellent and obsessively documented gear section on their website, but at the time of Washing Machine was probably a lot different..... I have an old Op Amp Big Muff, similar to Thurston (Moore)'s but it's even a little "metallic" sounding even with the tone turned off or completely bypassed, on Washing Machine it seems like a softer, more subduded fuzz....... not looking for exactly what they used but something that might get me closer, less screamy and more..... dull, mellow, relaxed perhaps? Should I be looking for a solid overdive instead, which I have never used regularly before?
BTW for reference I am playing an old SG into a Marshall JCM 900 with clean preamp tubes to cut down on the ridiculously high gain of those amps...... I reckon the guitar/amp combo play into it as well and make it more heavy than it needs to be........ but I'm just looking for a starting point......
Thanks!

I read they used the Honey Bee on that album, so I'm planning on building a clone. And my modded rat plus that should hopefully get me close to their sounds...
