Form over function smacked me again.

So, for those that don't know, in my 20+ years of playing I've really only started working with effects the last couple (had a Line 6 BassPod for a couple of years and sold it this spring to start my actual pedalboard building). I had everything set up on the board to - what I thought was - my liking, and would be the best. For ease, here's the board:

I didn't realize it at first, but I made a lot of mistakes when laying this thing out, many of which I discovered while doing a rehearsal of the movie we're playing this weekend.

For starters, I put the BassBone in a spot that is really hard to get to. I use that pedal pretty much all the time when switching from electric to upright bass at the drop of a hat. Sitting down, it was near impossible to get my foot in there and not step on my NE-1 preamp.

Secondly, where I put my looper is resulting in a lot of wasted space behind it. I could easily put it where my MXR Octave is, and let the input jacks all sit nicely under the shelf, out of the way.

So, I've got a little work to do tonight before our shows this weekend. Does this whole "arranging the pedalboard" thing get easier?

In a sense, yes. The more you play the board, the more you'll see what you need to do to become comfortable with your board. Operating a pedalboard live is way more challenging than people think. Especially if you have to sing!

But arranging & rearranging your board is the most fun part :p

I'm actually pretty good about spending money for gear. If it's in the gig fund, it can be spent. If it isn't, it can't.

Yeah, sorry, I'm why we can't have nice things.

Actually, I started keeping the gig money separate in order to keep all the 1099s at bay (I do about 120 gigs a year, at a lot of theatres, that do it all "legit") as a way to keep my wife off my back from any comments resulting from "Gotta run and get a new guitar cable." It's worked well.

Nice.

Hey, we're doing some shows up in your area (kind of). At the theatre in White Hall this Friday and Saturday if you fancy a different type of musical experience. We do original soundtracks to silent films, and are doing Buster Keaton's "The General." Lots of cool music.

I just finished it up; took about an hour and a half. I ended up pulling the volume pedal, NE-1 preamp and Steel Leather off for this weekend. I think it's going to work out pretty well. We'll find out on Friday. *fingers crossed*
