Working on building a small home studio, just wondering what methods (mics and mic positions) you guys like for recording guitars. I realize this can have a million answers, but just curious what everyone's using. Also, feel free to specify "clean" guitar or distorted/fuzz. Or who likes to DI guitar? I've messed with that before and got some cool results...anyways...

I do my cleans DI with reverb most of the time and everything else I like to blend angled mic and DI and I have been thinking of adding a distant mic at my ear level to blend in.

Close mic, slightly offset from center. To be honest though I haven't tried blending a close-mic with an ambient/room mic.

DIing is just so much easier. Mic Placement is a nightmare. I'm looking to get an amp with a line out for my next amp, hopefully.

All of my recordings recently have been DI guitar/bass. My last laptop was terrible at taking DI, but I tried it with my new one and it worked surprisingly well. Now I only mic if I want feedback.

I sometimes just throw a mic in the back of my little SS practice/awesome amp.

Lately close mic with a SM57 and Cascade FAT HEAD, with the FAT HEAD back a little bit from the 57, almost always off center. Also always record a clean and dry DI for reamping if needed.

Using a set of Rode NT-5s through an Apogee Duet worked damn good the few times I've done recordings. Could probably use other things besides the duet, but a good pair of condenser mics always sound great IMO.

strategically placed Sanyo boom-box to Solid State practice amp is my "favorite" but mostly i just go directly into my mixer becuz i read that Zen Arcade was recorded directly into the board so that's basically why i do it.

i do not use DI mostly becuz i don't have a decent CPU, DAW or interface. i would also like to Shure 57 close mic but i don't have a Shure 57 yet.

Really, you should get a half decent audio interface for recording anything at all. You should never really plug a mic into a laptop sound card either.
