Band of Horse = Good, Grizzly Bear = Effects gone wrong

Let's start with the fact that I really hope I am not a pretentious w@nker... but...
I headed to two concerts this week, and while
Band of Horses were understated (acoustic gig) the vocalist does use a fair bit of reverb / other effects on his voice to good effect. "Evening Kitchen" would have to be the best track I have seen live this year.
But I was totally let down by
Grizzly Bear. If you are a fan, like me, you know they have some great songs and a really interesting sound... but geez did they blow. The second lead guitarist (the tall one) was wailing through the mic like a stuck pig, way too loud and with so many effects it sounded like an out of tune air siren. You could not hear his actual voice tone, which from the album, can be amazing!
It was just a shame to see kids with too much money and effects blow it all by dialing the knobs too high... should I really judge them for that, probably not...
"let those who have not sinned throw..."

I've never seen Band of horses, but Grizzly Bear was amazing when I saw them. They sounded great and they
really seemed to be into what they were doing. Everyone has some bad shows, I suppose. Or maybe the wailing siren biz is the new avenue they are going down.

I saw Band of Horses do an electric set and yeah, you're right; Ben's vocals are set up perfectly! They have some tasty gear too.

I am either missing something, or it was the mix? Oh well...

I hate to defend them, because I do not like them, however, sound guys are very important to a show of that caliber. After seeing a band several times in different settings, you realize that the sound guy can really mess something up. Especially the ones that have never even heard the band that they are mixing or listen to that music.

I've seen Grizzly Bear three times and each time they blew me away but every time I've seen them it takes forever for soundcheck because they have so much stuff. I think you caught them on a off night and it shouldn't discourage you from seeing them again.

Grizzly Bear are one of the very best live bands out there now. Couldn't have been anything more than just a bad night. I've been utterly blown away all the times I've seen them. That said, they do rely heavily on effects, ones that if not tuned in just right will throw off their set a lot. Tube Zipper, POG, and reverb on literally everything. Not to mention Chris Taylor, their bass player has a pedal board that puts a lot of guitarists to shame.

and that's only about half of it....

give em another shot next time.
