I've never heard a Tanpura before but it looks similar to a sitar. I'm gonna have to try to find some demos.
The U Bass though - that thing is cool as heck! A UKELELE BASS??! Come on, you KNOW that's what you need to own. Shiit, I might get one myself (If I ever manage to get more than $40 disposable dollars in my hand).

A tanpura is used to provide rhythmic backing drones, usually accompanied by sitar or sarod, and tablas.
I got to see my best friend sit and drone away on the tan while Ken Zuckerman and Swapan Chaudhuri (some of the best in the world) RIPPED SHIT UP for about 2 hours.

(no, that's not my friend)
I stumbled across a U bass this weekend and it sucked actually. The strings are big floppy pieces of plastic/rubber/something. Not a lot of volume either.
Maybe it's because I so used to the tension of real bass strings?

Lately I have been having a load of fun with my Kaossilator. It could easily lend itself to annoying the shit out of people!

of course there are digital versions too.
I love that video Space, now if I could only play bass lines that would fit in with that I'd so happy.

If you want to irritate, go with the trusty banjo.

I vote tanpura. General rule is get a plain-jane one. On the entry level ones [and those are] the fancy ones are just for looks and usually the same instrument as then less "looker" ones. Also I'd stay with a four string, that is the most used. One thing I have always wanted to try is slide on one of those...
also there is a lot of good info on ICM theory on line that will help you learn the best ways to use it. It is too bad the Ragmala forum is gone, I'd have pointed you there if you went tanpura as they were all really nice guys, but that forum is no more
