Bad or Good Decision

so the last couple of months ive been thinking of trading my rickenbacker 330 in to buy a 4001 or 4003 bass
its an older rickie and the pickups are slowly dying out and its a bitch to keep serviced in tip top shape and i like it dont get me wrong but it seems for me to use it i have to absolutely lace it in effects like reverb or chorus and it always needs a boost to bring it up and it sounds a little dry.

on the plus it does what its famous for its hollow super light necks awesome cause my back is eternally screwed

i dont know maybe im not thinking straight and getting caught up in the downs of it

to sell or not to sell
opinions?

For me it would depend on whether I loved it or not...even with the amount of work if it gave me that tone that I was after Id keep it and try to save for a bass. It also kinda depends on how much I would use the bass - if it was now and again, I'd get a Japanese 4001 copy (I have an Aria stereo 4001 that rocks) and be happy with that, but if was my main instrument I'd go for the Ric. The Japanese 4001 copies from the 70's are generally awesome for alot less money. I look at my vintage gear sometimes and consider selling, but I always think that its gonna cost alot more if I decide to get it again down the track. Having said that, I have lots of vintage gear and its a pita and expensive to keep it shipshape sometimes... but when it works and is dialed in right... :omg:

From your litany maintenance woes it seems like something you should let go. However, if they thing you like the most about it is that its ultra-light, perhaps the 4001/3 isn't the right choice for you. Those things are like bricks!

(rad sounding bricks, nonetheless)

Difficult decision personally I think I’d get the pickups rewound and keep it.

I think you will find that a new one won’t feel or sound exactly the same and you will regret selling the old one in the near future.

You should get it rewired and change pups. It'll be worth it. Basses are heavier.

a good thing for me was that it was hollow and it made it comfortable to play alot on the road but it wasnt essential

ive thought about buying one of the 4001 clones like a greco and so forth but even those are scarse these days and there expensive aswell it seems kinda i dont know how to say it but going half way up the mountain when you can have whats on top

id use it no doubt
it would be nice to even out my setup so i have only one dedicated guitar that covers all stops (jazzmaster) and a epic bass, im not a bass player but even though i dont its totally the only bass ive looked at and GAS

i used to be a collector and had racks of guitars but the faze is gone ive owned every guitar ive ever wanted now haha i dont have any choices left except to bass territory and thats slim pickins the 330 was the last guitar i lusted for and i got one after years

thanks for the opinions its def helpin me out

I'd keep the 330 and wait for a vintage clone to pop up. Judging by how few pop up for sale in NYC, getting another 330 would be tough even.

I believe the real question is...

What is better a P bass or a J bass?

i cant tell you what to do, but as for myself; ive been through tons of gear and my 2 biggest regrets are getting rid of a rhodes 88 suitcase piano, and my rick 330. :( i miss it SO much sometimes. if i can ever make enough money and justify spending it, id love to own another. btw, the prices on these confuse me. seems like they go up and down a lot, or has the value just gone up a lot recently? mine was a 98, bought a few years ago for like $800. i dont know if that deal is still around, the newer ones ive seen seem to have upwards of $1200-1500 price tags?

ahhhh... everyone who knows me knows i refer to my 330 as "the one that got away"

DUDE! I've only ever seen 1 of those, but it was awesome. It was a friend of mines who now plays terrible music...none of which involves the bass
