hey guys, i'm gonna be in providence for 3 weeks during July and I'm gonna be missing a lot of show that I wanted to see back home during that time, so I'm wondering what are some good venues in Providence to check out? I'm looking for more "indie" kinda things as well as experimental and noisy. if you could help me out i'd really appreciate it!

If you want to keep track of indie / noisy stuff, definitely go to http://www.lotsofnoise.com/

Check out www.as220.org as well (they're a venue), though they're listed on Lots Of Noise.

Also, check Firehouse 13 - http://www.firehouse13.org/calendar_new.php

http://indieartsri.org/ may have stuff you'd dig.

http://the201providence.com is a bar I like, though I think they mostly keep their calendar on Facebook.

If you're looking for a place to buy music, go to http://www.armageddonshop.com/ (I mean, the physical location over on Broadway).

And if you're on Broadway anyhow, you can go to my favorite gear store, http://www.b-sharpmusic.com/

And if you're looking at gear, you may as well go look at some super fancy expensive gear that I certainly can't afford over at http://www.myspace.com/empireguitars (if you're there, ask for Creed, just cuz he's a nice guy and definitely into experimental / drone / noise).

You can find out about some local shows (as well as a lot of local bands) over at http://www.75orlessrecords.com/

What 3 weeks are you going to be here in July?

AS220 is a killer joint.

I love Providence. Have only played there once, myself, but it is BY FAR my fondest show memory.

True, and it is sad. But there is a new restaurant there that's supposed to be pretty good (I haven't tried it myself yet), and Providence does not lack for good food...

ah, thanks so much! I'm there from July 12 until July 30 as I'm doing a summer program at Brown (which unfortunately means I will be without a guitar  )

Excellent. What summer program are you attending?

Also, don't miss out on this: http://www.providencesoundsession.com/ - it can be a pretty ridonkulous time. It runs the 18th through the 24th, and on the 24th they basically shut down downtown for outdoor shows, vendors and a crazy Carnival-style parade.

ah, thanks. that festival sounds great and AS220 seems pretty awesome as well. I'm doing a course called Science, Perception, and Reality, which is basically a lot of philosophy and a bit of physics/metaphysics relating to "reality"

Cool. Well, if you're of legal age and there's a good show coming through, let me know and I'll meet up for a beer (or, uh, just the show if you're not legal yet). Heck, maybe we could even rope BigChiefBC in as well.

I'm not legal yet, still got a ways to go. But yeah, if there's a good show let's try and meet up, always good to meet fellow fuzz-heads
