Personally, I wouldn't butcher anything vintage (those top Matons aren't reissues, are they?) The Matons I've seen on ebay are very pricey, and besides fitting a jag trem would instantly render a quite gorgeous guitar worthless project fodder.
Are Jags and Jazzmasters still the coolest guitars? I do love my JM but worry about their dodgy 90s alt rock baggage.

i second that, i played a few Matons when i was in school in Australia.
they are all very well built and i think they are quite perfect the way they are.
and i think you may want to check

so i guess you are getting those matons in a pretty decent price yeah?
i remember a friend of mine once scored a 503 or some sort with a hard case for $250, keep an eye on your local newspaper mate.
