New ToneCore module: octave / subharmonic generator

Hello everyone.

We have just released an octave/subharmonic generator as a module for the Line 6 ToneCore docks. A few clips here, with more coming:
http://redpandalab.com/products/subdivision/

This started with eti requesting an octave fuzz. I spent a couple of months researching and implementing a nice digital clipping algorithm in DSP56k assembly. But it seemed kind of silly to use a 100 MIPS DSP to emulate a couple of diodes or transistors, so I threw that code out and focused on sub octave generation - and 5ths. eti asked for other intervals (and I owed him for dropping the fuzz), so it also generates 3rds below the suboctave. The character is different from analog octave dividers or digital pitch shifters. It's synthetic, but maintains the dynamics and timbre of your guitar. A 3-position switch controls the harmonics of the sub octave signals, and an adjustable filter rounds out the tone. It tracks better than a blue box ;)

Meant to get this out a few weeks ago, but the electricity in eti's building caused the prototype to flake out (fixed - now immune to such interference), and I spent all of last weekend at DEMF (Movement 2010). We appreciate the great feedback we have received from ILFers, so for the next week it's yours for $70 with free shipping (worldwide). Just PM me before 12:00am EDT June 14th to arrange.

Damn, that sounds pretty good! If it could handle chords it would be insane, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon.

If you're running it into a fuzz, I kinda like how chords sound. Especially with the octave up.

Great idea.

I wouldn't own Line 6 anything, even if free.

Make a stand alone unit.

Probably sell a few more that way.

I've actually started designing standalone hardware for the next Red Panda pedal. A standalone Subdivision might happen at some point, but have a few other ideas to tackle first...so not anytime soon. In the meantime, we are hijacking ToneCore docks and taking advantage of Line 6's massive manufacturing capability.

i am thinking about getting a Line 6 Spider 150 Watt Guitar Amp Head for my noise project.

omg, I hate you... I <3 the subharmonicalzzz... and I have no money!

a subharmonic gen. in a pedal would be SOOOOO fucking cool, though... I mean, I never use them plugged into guitar amps because the effect seems to be lost that way, but subharmonic gens can fuck up a fb loop, and I love getting my ears raped by big, black, subharmonic generator dick when I use one at the end of a chain directly into the mixer w/ the bass EQ maxed and a pair of headphones on... IT'S ORGASMIC I TELL YOU!

</retard post>

EDIT: Would you ever think of making *just* a subharmonic gen. with features more features... like a knock-off of the Peavey Kosmos?

Didn't think of it until you mentioned it just now ;)

Edit: By cranking up the -1 oct knob and closing down the filter, Subdivision should be able to get tones similar to the Peavey's "Quake" knob. But the Subdivision's filter is after the subharmonic generator, so it won't be limited to the bottom octave (for better or worse). On the plus side, Subdivision gives you more control over the subharmonic tone. No "Thud", though.

This thing is seriously cool. I hope to have a more coherent review together soon, and music clips to back it up, but for now you'll have to trust me: it's badass.

Thanks jrmy! Here's a quick clip eti made of subharmonics (3rds and 5ths) on a clean guitar:
subharmonics.mp3

It goes 5th below suboctave, 5th below fundamental, 3rd below suboctave, then back again.
