So I'm thinking about getting an old Traynor and have read all the raves online, but was hoping to hear more specifically from the fine folks here at ILF. I think of all the models I've narrowed it down to a YGL or YGM because of the verb and trem. I had been looking into the YGM-3 converted to a head over at TGP but I lost it today... so I've got my eye on a YGL3 combo, the extra headroom might be nice someday anyway. I know theres a bit of difference between all the different models, but unfortunately these things never show up where I'm at so I havent actually played one.

So what do you all have to say about the old Traynors? Especially the YGLs and YGMs.

don't think it is something you should "overthink." just buy it.

you can't go wrong with vintage traynor.

any vintage amp will most likely need some work but... who cares. Do it.
My brother has an old traynor combo and he swears its the best amp for guitar.. ever.
but he's prone to exaggerate from time to time.

The only thing you need to do is 3-prong plug, get rid of the deathcap, and new speaker in the YGM3.

I've got a UK greenback in the YGM3 and a C90 in the YGM2. Great little amps. hand-wired, tag-board construction, made in Canada.
What's not to like?

It starts to break up at about 6 and is pretty crunchy by about 8. It's plenty loud though (for me, not for Madison Square Gardens). I don't really like the natural overdrive that much, and run it pretty clean with a Tube Driver as a dirt preamp.
I suspect a red fang would be a good speaker for that amp but haven't got around to trying one yet. I like the C90 in the YGM2, which is darker sounding. Together they're a good pair though.

If you can afford it and WANT it then yes, that is a decent price on a GREAT amp imo.

Esp. if it has been serviced and has a clean bill of health.

I was just going to say if you can afford it then do it, then I noticed inface said the same thing.
You won't find a Fender Twin for anywhere near that price -- it's going to be LOUD though

haven't got too much knowledge on traynor amps but know that Johannes Persson of Cult Of Luna (and Khoma) uses an older combo version. Loud is the word!

im still thinkin about it... i wanna see if i can get it for $420 after shipping. i would like more headroom and power than my 5 watt gibson... but i dont know if i want THAT much power. i guess it could come in handy if i ever needed it... but does anyone know if itd be okay to pull 2 of the 4 power tubes?

Stick an attenuator in there maybe?
