Update: I've got a kinda weird one-off enclosure. I had this one nickel plated by a local guy who thought he'd be able to do high quality plating for me. Of course I jumped at it b/c that sounded AWESOME, but the results weren't really even or smooth enough, and the price was pretty crazy, so it was a dead end. I found it in a box the other day though, and it DOES have a funky/cool vibe, so I thought I'd offer it up.

Anyone interested in having a DL4 built w/ this enclosure? Maybe adding some paint or some kind of relic job could be cool? Drop me a PM if you've got an idea for a direction to take this sucker in!!!







UPDATE 3/11/2015 - Haven't done any pedal mods in the last couple years, all I've had time for is the DIY Kits. Thought I'd throw the old thread up & see if there is any interest in me dusting off the old Weller & doing some MODS!!!

I've been having lots of trouble keeping up with the demand for the DL4 mods I've been doing. While I know lots of folks will still want to send in their units for snazzy paint & other custom goodness, other would prefer to take things in their own hands! 1) Text Instructions w/ Color Pix (now a download) - these will be pretty detailed & include clear photos showing how the unit comes apart & goes back together, how I perform the mods, etc.
2) 4x brand new rugged, chassis mounted, soft-touch momentary stomp switches pre-wired w/ high quality hook-up wire & heat shrink
3) 4x water clear, high brightness LEDs in your choice of the following colors: Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange, Violet, White, Pink
5) high quality solder & de-soldering braid, heat shrink tubing
6) 24k 1% 1/4W resistors for output buffer mod

Newest Update (as of 11/18/09) - I no longer have a wait list for my DL4 mods. I have worked hard to achieve this and it has meant investing in my own powder coating setup and cutting back my hours at 'the day job'. Turnaround is now ~2wks for most DL4 projects. I can do nearly any color under the sun & have a healthy sense of adventure, so if you have an idea you don't see listed, feel free to contact me see if I can make it happen!

What I do:

1) I'm no longer replacing the stock parts w/ new stock parts. I can't stand behind them the way I want to so I'm ONLY offering the new super-bad@$$, chassis mounted, soft touch, momentary stomp switches. These are a 1,000,000% improvement - you will love them. Not only are they more rugged, but they make timing your loops much easier due to their smooth/precise engagement.

2) I replace the stock red LEDs with water-clear, super-bright parts in your choice of totally rad colors (currently have white, blue, red, green, orange, pink, UV, others may be available on request).

3) At your option, I replace 2x surface mount resistors to increase the output buffers gain & fix the volume drop some users experience.

4) I carefully remove the silver control labels and media blast the enclosure down to bare aluminum and powder coat it for a much more durable (and sexy-hot) finish. I can also chemically strip the enclosure, hand sand it down to 2000 grit and then hand polish it for a beautiful 'bare' worn in look that ages very well with use.

5) All jacks & pots are cleaned, beer, soda, cat piss, etc. is cleaned from the board, etc.

6) I offer a range of expression (EXP) options that take advantage of the DL4s deep & powerful stock expression controls. Instead of taking up the real estate on your board for a dedicated expression pedal, you can have either a large knob (EXP knob) mounted on either side of the pedal (or even on top for those of you with extra tight boards!) or a stomp switch w/ status indicator (EXP switch) which jumps between 'heel' and 'toe' positions. I can even combine the two with either a toggle or foot switch to select between them. For those who haven't yet explored the possibility of expression controls on a DL4, it really is fantastic. You can adjust, by foot & on the fly, things like the loop mix, delay settings in looping mode, or shifting between two 'snapshots' within any of your presets. NOTE: These mods are often referred to as the 'double preset' mod - this is a misleading name, as you can see.

What is the base cost of the unit you're about to start working on? Have always been curious about these. Such nice looking work! Also - any possibility to do CV instead of EXP where applicable?

Whoops! I meant to put the price of the base unit in the OP - its $150 & that gets you a DL4 w/ a brand new PCB. Thats essentially a brand-freakin-new pedal. . .



Making the jump to CV is something I've never even thought of, and would probably be a bit of a PITA (would require support circuitry I'd imagine), but of course anything is possible. The EXP mods don't actually add any functionality - they're just novel/compact ways to access the already-incredible & oft overlooked stock EXP functions of the DL4.

if there was a way to extend the loop time on this thing I'd go for one of these immidiately! Even so, this is brilliant stuff..

is it possible to get a mod for an extra footswitch for reverse...it would be great to have one seperate from the half speed that takes you straight to reverse without having to buy that gigantic new model line 6 has.
