I actually learned to play and sing with Police songs. Walking On The Moon is a good starter.

But, yeah, bass/singing is harder than guitar/singing.

It really depends on what kind of guitar lines you're playing. If it's just chugging out power chords or strumming some relatively simple rhythm it's not two hard, but once things start to get more rhythmic(like most bass lines), it get's tougher to separate a melody from what you're playing.

But my philosophy is that it's always easier to do it if you first know both parts incredibly well on their own. Especially lyrics, you can't be fumbling around trying to remember lyrics while you're trying to play.
