I need to be comforatable with someone to get a tattoo from them but their portfolio has to kick ass as well. It took a tat or two to come up with that and I stick with it. I am lucky though, my good friend is an amazing tattoo artist, he stays booked up for 3-4 months in advance (that is rare for a town like Gainesville). He had an apprentice that now works at the shop and I'll let him tattoo me too.
I would book a consultation with the artist that has the impressive work. Any artisit that is good will gladly meet with you to discuss potential work. Then you can get a chance to see what you think of the dude.

hurm. have a smaller tat i wanted to get done, was s'posed to go with my friend to a grrL she likes in a week and a few days. she LOVES the guy that has done a bunch on her (good work), but i'm more comfy with a layday doing art on me and want to get this easy thing done so i can check someone out and talk to them about the two more complex things i want and the mods i want done to the thing on my back.... there's a place near us run by all laydays that are s'posed to be good....

would you go to the guy that has a solid rep and you've seen a lot of his work or try out someone you don't know anybody that's been inked up there but it's all womens and you'd prefer a grrL?

...... typing that out kinda made me lean one way hard, but thoughts? murrrrr?

I think that in the long run you it's better to get the permanent ink done by someone great. You won't remember an awkward experience if that's how it goes down.

well, he's actually a guy that tried out for the last band i was in when we were looking for a drummer. he's a good guy. know him a little from shows and stuff and he's done a bunch of friends. he's good.

i'm being silly. it's mostly 'cause it IS kinda intimate having somebody lean on you and permanently alter your body for hours. i like thwt connection with laydays more than doods. but i'm kinda weird about stuff like that. in the RL i have way more friends that are grrLs than guys. like an 8-1 ratio easy. i feel more comfy with chicks.

but yeah... my friend's getting at him to see if he has time this Monday. 'm escited. thought it was going to be a week from this Monday. woot.

urrrrr.... i don't remember totally.... i know you're s'posed to not show a new tat sunlight for a few months (NOT a problem) and you shouldn't soak it in water so working out is out for.... the first few days? i forget. i'm trying to commit to getting this chub off but i'm so LAZY it's hard for me to get back into working out if i take a break.

oh jia! we had a pretty good gig pop up (some of the drummer's friends that we fit with their band stylistically, on a Friday at a decent bar for live music, sort of a built in crowd) so we're going to be playing our first show August 24th. lol. there's still some ironing out to be done on the 30 or so minutes of stuff we have now and we have 2 songs that are close to done so it's going to be a fun couple/three weeks of FOCUSING in practice. neat.

gawd i miss gigging.

Getting back into gigging is a BIG deal. It is fun to hammer songs out with a deadline. We are so close to finishing a pretty ass song that I wrote the music too. We should have our Mastered songs back in September.

Interesting, I've never looked at it as intimate, you just sit there like a canvas. My favourite part is that buzzing sound of the machine, love that.

As for aftercare, just spray the thing with liquid bandage. No more messy vaseline/preparation H and plastic wrap. Spray it on and about a week later it's all healed. You can even shower with it and not do the awkward posturing to avoid it getting wet. The Health Inspection making that mandatory for tattoo shops a few years back is the best thing they've ever done. You can probably still work out if you're just getting a little piece.
