Squier has been really good as of late. When I bought my VM Jag bass, it slaughtered the lower end Fenders in the store.

I've seen those ones on eBay, but I've been told to get the "Made In Japan" one over the "Crafted In Japan" one... for whatever reason. I'll keep my eye out... but then yeah, after playing with my $300 Hofner Beatle Bass yesterday, it made me feel like I am happiest with "cheap" guitars.
