to me they feel amazing when I'm just doing doing basic stuff close to the nut, but otherwise my Mickey Mouse fingers clog up the fretboard.

I've been debating that. And the PJ pickup combo sounds good to me. Haven't actually tried one out in a store, though. I might just go with whatever decent-but-cheap P-Bass I can find?
