Understanding more about electronics and schematics is definately something i want to learn after I finish school. I am trying to schedule in learning more about Ableton soon, so that will take up my extracurricular learning for awhile.

Honestly, I'm still not awesome at reading schematics, but I'm getting better. I knew fuck all about it until a few years ago, when Devi published the schems for the SM and TP on the forum. They were nice simple circuits and were cool to learn on. Then I got a Beavis Board and just fucked around with components for a while, which taught me a lot. This is also a cool diagram to show you some basics:

oof. yah. my new Stop Playing Video Games And Be PRODUCTIVE thing is sitting down with Massive and the rest of Komplete and finally getting my head all the way around them. i've worked with Kontakt and Battery to know how to do things i like, need to get there with the rest of the suite (and Maschine) instead of barely tweaking presets.

back when i used to pay way too much to read Sound On Sound and that other big electronic musician gear mag out of the UK (Future Music? don't remember.) all the time they had some guy that was working all the time doing remixes for people and playing Ibiza and all that say something really interesting. paraphrasing - "the problem with software is the version numbers. used to be, you would buy a piece of kit, a drum machine or a synth or whatever, and spend hours and hours and hours and HOURS delving into it. people would find out ways to do stuff that it wasn't intended to do that was BETTER than what it was intended to do. you can't do that with software. as soon as a new revision comes out, you upgrade. you have to. then if they've changed an integral part of what you used it for....... you're fucked. so no-one learns the software as well as they did the hardware. it's just not feasible."

I generally agree with you Behndoranumas and said electronic-badass that was quoted. I have a copy of Ableton Live 8 suite, I am sure that an a new version is around the corner (2-3 years at the most) so, F-em. IF I learnhow to manipulate Live 8 i will roll with it, until I see how much better 9 is, and get program envey.

yah. only problem is that they're such integrated pieces dependent on each other. if you get a new browser on your computer you need to upgrade a plugin which means you need to grab a Windows patch which means a soft synth won't interface properly if it's not current...... then you're onto a new version even if you don't want to.

love computers. love electronic musics. love the idea of having everything on one laptop that you can make backups and duplicate on other systems with just the data you'd be able to carry on a flash drive.

but there's such a divide between reliable single purpose units being arrayed for a result (pedalboard) and a single box with All The Loots In The World.

Yeah. I want to get REALLY involved in sound processing and that shizz. Not so much on schematics and electronic building repairing stuff. I'm cool taking my shit to a friend to fix....but I can't have a friend on stage with me messing with the parameters on Ableton or even the Timeline during a show....that's stuff I HAVE to spend more time on.

I'm not even going to try and pretend that I'll learn more about it one day. I just won't. I have the interest, just not the desire to sit down and study squiggley lines and numbers. Plus, electricity and I don't mix. Being dumb prolly doesn't help either.
