THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME
Finally, a chance for the tuba to shine. In anime form. In moe anime form.
If only the anime girls were the instruments, like in Upotte.
s-senpai...if you do that, my spit valve will...

OH MY.

Hoping there's a bassoon-playing side character. Or at least an episode where they find a contrabass saxophone buried in the back of the band room closet.

There is apparently a bass sax girl not in the intro.
Also a dude who plays trombone that may or may not ever be introduced in the anime.
There should be a mediocre French horn girl whose schtick is bitching about how much harder her parts are to play.

Glad, I waited to buy part 1 of GiTS: Arise on DVD. Came with a neat and informative booklet for episodes 1 and 2. Really liking the series, happy I waited for a hard copy.

YES.

Are you familiar with the novels, then? I haven't had a chance to see if there are translations available.

Nah, I only read a thread about the anime.
Pretty sure it'll be K-On with brass instruments, but maybe the soundtrack will be cool.

Just finished Hyouka. I loved it but I have difficulty saying whether or not it was a "great" series because it was spot on to my sensibilities, I was going to like it as long as it was competently done anyway.

The only thing that sorta put me off was the main plot basically ending halfway through the show and the pace slowing down heaps. Just felt a little anticlimactic maybe?
Otherwise i thought that show was super good. There isn't really a lot of good mystery themed stuff out there so it stood out. Decent characters, awesome animation quality, minimal fanservice, enough comedy/romance to not bring you down, etc.

Currently watching/almost finished the Hellsing Ultimate OVA's. So badass god damnit. AAAAAAMEN.

Also Tsukimonogatari was the best. Made my damn year.

And Durarara season 2 starts in a week! And the psycho pass movie too.

Yeah the first arc probably was the most exciting but I really dug the whole "detective of the mundane/slice of life" feel, the second half of the series definitely started using the mysteries more as a vehicle for character development though rather than being super engaging in themselves. They weren't bad or anything but the reveal wasnt as interesting as how the main characters interacted throughout the investigation.

You're totally right though, the mystery genre is something I totally love but am usually dissapointed in. Un-Go was a good example, I wanted to like it so bad but nope. Really, really don't. I sometimes wish they would take some leaves from the Scandanavian crime genre and anime-ised it. I think it would be a better fit than anything noir or western police procedural style. I also think it would be really cool to see some political thrillers, even if it's part of a broader plot. I am probably trying to force fairly western (and adult) show formats onto the medium though.

Yeah man, I'm excited for those too! I'm pretty sure I've already confessed my love for monogatari plenty here, though I am a bit behind at the moment, got to get on that.

I liked Hyouka too, but I actually remember the series' pace seeming to be pretty slow it's entire run. I watched it weekly as it aired, though, which might be why. But I definitely agree about the mysteries being less engaging in the second half.
I loved the interactions between Eru and Houtarou! So much cuteness and awkwardness without seeming completely contrived.

Watched Attack on Titan during the holiday. Got my father to watch it with me, he got interested to the point of us discussing it over breakfast and shit. It was really good, too bad it ended on a cliffhanger and the next season won't be out in a year. I might have to start reading the manga...

I want to watch that. I have been holding off because I haven't finished reading the manga yet.
