It seems to me, if you're gasin' for something else now, you will be later. You've been on the hunt for the perfect 10 year amp and keeping your MESA didn't seem to really be a thought. I do like the idea of a smaller extra amp that could be used at home for practice, with headphones for quiet times, and a backup with a DI out just in case...

Yeah. I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons. I love the Mesa 400+ sound. Before the baby bomb drop, I was set to get that new Mesa Strategy (was kinda considering the Reeves Custom 225). The only concern I had was that it might not sound like the 400+. I then freaked out and started looking solid state after the explosion. Didn't even consider just getting a practice amp and keeping the 400+. Had that "on the hunt high". Now the dust is settling. And putting a 12au7 in the driver tube position might make it my perfect sounding amp. But it's huge, heavy as shit, takes 16 tubes, and is over 20 years old.

And the Glock ain't no bitch sounding amp, either. It would be newer, is insanely reliable, and would be just a one stop shop. Easier than dealing with and having two amps around an insanely crowded house. Or do I just want it because it costs more money and it's exotic and at a great price......?

But like I said before, not really a wrong answer. And both are pretty resellable if something else catches my eye. I'm not buying new so I would really only lose shipping. And it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to be stuck with either of these for a few months if they take long to sell. I don't know. Still doing some musing.

Just typing my thoughts out. Back to Hawk gawking,

OK. Emoness over. I'm keeping the Mesa. Get a new set of tubes (gotta research what to get), put in the 12au7, and maybe get this mod put in: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/switc ... mp-238662/

Now to find what I'll get for a practice/at home amp. Wonder what sounds closest to the 400+. For some reason GK is coming to mind. Maybe five babies has just made me stupid. :idk:

Sousie - have you tried any of the other Mesa's out? I loved my 400+ but sold it for the reasons you mentioned (weight, fragility, and the fucking cost of retubing that biatch)

Nothing is going to sound like the 400, but you might RRLLLYY like the Carbine or Titan.

I keep a 1001RB racked right on top of my Carbine :joy:

It's a wicked, delicious little amp.

I think the reason why I'm drawn to the 400+ and Glock would be the clear, articulate, hifi, distinction they have.....the non all tube Mesas strike me as a little less.....that....I dunno. I think the GK is more those adjectives, eh? I know nothing comes close to the 400+. I mean....if a solid state amp did, the 400+ would be obsolete.....but would you say the 1001RB gets closer to that quick response hifi than any other Mesa?

The GK is VERY hi-fi, but not "tubey"

It's great for articulate, clean, punchy tone. I actually used it extensively when I had a *shrug* reggae gig years back. I used to play fingerstyle on the bridge PU, and sounded fakkin GREAT through the GK.

It's very quick in respone like the SS amp it is, and EQ is STUPID powerful.

and just for good measure..... sexy eye candy to illustrate (but really shameless ploy for attention being the drrtyyy whore that I am)

:joy:

Damn, man. WTF. So much awesome.

So would you think I'd be better off served looking for a GK practice amp or Mesa if I'm looking to get as close to the 400+ as cheaply solid state possible?

And just losing shipping in order to ensure you get what you want is a fantastic deal. :thumb:

That's kinda tricky.... another Mesa such as the Carbine, Mpulse, etc... will sound closer to the 400 than the GK given the tube in the preamp.

Are you definitely looking for something totally solid state?
