One of my lesser genie wishes would be for people to stop performatively forgetting about the existence of the Electoral College every four years to jerk themselves off about the importance of voting.
Most of us live in non-competitive states, in non-competitive House districts, with non-competitive Senate races. If you live in New York, you can vote for anyone you want and no one gets to shame you. A vote for the Rent Is Too Goddamned High guy is not a vote for Donald Trump.

True. Back when I lived in MA didn't really matter whom I voted for POTUS. The Commonwealth always carried the Democrat,

Well ... I hadn't thought that the result would turn out to be this close. And I stayed up all night for THIS?

Absolutely shameful for Democrats that it's so close.
You can't ignore suppression, the impact of deranged American Protestantism, ingrained white supremacy, etc. for the overall result but losing ground with Latino voters is absurd. They are not identity-driven like Black voters (or many other idpol sub-demos), because there is no "Latino" identity - people of Guatemalan and Mexican and Cuban descent do not think of themselves as being altogether similar. They are, though, poorer and more likely to not have a college degree - you have to win them over with policy, with improving their material circumstances. Kinda like 'working class whites' minus the deranged evangelical streak.
But Democrats would rather try to win suburban Republicans than anyone from the working class. If they lose ground with working class Black voters, they won't be able to win the local dog catcher race.

We're coming out of 50 years of propaganda that every problem you have, the government makes it worse -- even to the extent people *can* see that they need and deserve help from the nation / state, they've learned not to expect it from politics.
I grew up just outside Mahoning County OH (Youngstown) which just went GOP for the first time maybe ever to vote for Trump, even though that's where all the black and non-white people in the area live -- as a Bernie guy who made a lot of phone calls and did some door knocking it's sad, but I get why even though people trusted Bernie as a person to fight for them, they didn't think even if he won the primary he could make something positive happen through government for people.
No matter who wins here, it's going to take a long time to roll that cynicism and pessimism back in America -- and Democrats aren't going to wake up and realize that a longterm project of proving to (working) people you'll fight for them as long as it takes to get some wins is a strategic, rational necessity -- not when it's so much easier and more fun for them to court the money of DC suburbs and well-paid tech bros. My hope instead, but I think it's a feasible one, is that enough people will make positive change for working people an ethical commitment instead of a political calculation, and will get together enough here and there, in whatever groups or movements they can, until something starts to catch. Once some wins start to happen, people will see it as possible again, see they deserve a country that functions for them
