lol. just came here to note that I ordered one from cme last night, thanks to PanicProne's glowing rec, and despite the cute kitty graphic and of course the absurdly inflated price.

Got a rat king locally not too long ago and it's maybe my favourite dirt pedal I have ever used! Nothing comes close to how good this sits in the mix for my band

my personal experience from recording (bedroom and big traditional studio) and live playing:

Compressors are good for keeping the low end consistent (and for not clipping the front end of solid state amps). Drive is nice, but any bass drive absolutely must have a clean blend. I don't care what anyone says, you will lose your lowest fundamentals and also probably just blend straight into the guitars without one (fun fact: Clean guitars/basses are always more present in the mix). Chorus and flangers sound super sexy on bass. As for reverb/delay on bass it super depends on the style of music you're playing. Keep in mind that modulation & echo has the effect of making things blend into the mix and too much feedback/repeats on time effects can get muddy on low-end instruments quickly. Just avoid tremolo on the bass like the plague imo, or have fun not being heard.

Other stuff like envelope filters, LPFs and octavers are fun but I don't really make music where they're appropriate so I have no experience with those.

Probably the best thing a live playing bassist can do for themselves is invest in a DI/Preamp like the MXR, Sansamp, Darkglass etc. Most FOH people will insist on taking a direct feed so you might as well have one of your own. Even if they don't know how to make the Darkglass or Sansamp sound good, it'll never sound bad (I don't have experience the MXR or Boss offerings).
