If we're going that way I'll repeat what I said in the unpopular album opinion that I don't think Awake was a bad album. But fuck most of Dream Theater.
I'm a huge prog head, but I'm more into the weird bands that mingle complex music and crazy grooves. You know, the Magmas, Mars Voltas, and Animals As Leaders of the world. Also bands that like to make their guitars sound like anything but, like the Latest Karnivool or Tera Melos. Then there's the "essentially fusion jazz" prog which I like a lot, usually in the tune of Steven Wilson.

And then there's prog-post metal...
I guess anything that's not rooted in Dream Theater/Power Metal I like.

But I agree, it's considered their best for a reason.
