How do you go out of your way to encourage participation from people that aren't white boys?

At least out here in California all of that old talk about safe spaces, workshops, and stuff was a little bit of bullshit. It was just another way to divide people (like this guy is better than that guy). I missed one food not bombs meeting because I was sick..."kicked out of the scene". Took a girl I was into to the Weezer show in our independent venue (because she liked them and it was a nice thing to do)..."kicked out of the scene". Literally, these dudes that practiced all the good stuff would just kick people out if they wern't cool enough...they just called it "involved" or supporting "DIY efforts". They didn't like one guy because he was a heroin addict, liked the other heroin addict because he was in their band. Stupid shit. Nothing has changed (moved to a different city and can't even find a show except hipster ones and those are even worse...one look at me wearing a gauze shirt...was not let inside even though I repainted the venue for free and replumbed it).
The only good scene I was ever a part of was the street kid scene up in Chico. We all had like a common damage or something and it worked like a nice, screwed up family. But it fragmented eventually. And it was small to begin with (and some were police informants, creepers, and druggies...but somehow it worked...everyone had some level of respect for each other). But the real "punk" scene ran by P.A.W.N.S. at the time wanted nothing to do with the kids in the park because we wern't thinking the big anarchy picture or whatever.
I don't give a fuck who Whirr is. Never heard of them or deafheaven and only heard of GLOSS recently.
I do get a little sick of the social media things though. I lost some friend over that recently because of the way I was born...even though we come from the same neighborhood, have the same education, etc. I don't mind people going after Whirr. Fuck em. I don't like being grouped with a generalized idea of what white people are as a whole. After I got told I was to blame for the death of Trayvon Martin to my face several times (because I am white)...I just got sick of that side of social media and had to cut ties with the people I grew up with. I have no problem with people going after the asshole that killed him though...just I always hope that the whole story is there.
But Punk scenes are so different everywhere...I just always look at people as a weird extension of the society they came from...the same percentage of assholes and cliche pricks are going to present in the scene as the world they supposedly "counter". They are the best things we've got a lot of times and I think good intentions are there, but assholes still ruin things. I just got sick of playing the game just like I got sick of doing what my boss told me on a whim. All I can do as a person is respect everyone as best I can and try to be the best person I can.
I still think the GLOSS demo was pretty good.

Encouraging non white dudes: it's pretty much as simple as being pro-active in booking bands that aren't four or five white dudes with guitars hey. That's basically all you need to do. From that it's more of a case of everyone just making sure everyone isn't acting like total arseholes, getting people to settle down if the crowd's getting too rough and women are getting shoved aside, that kinda shit. I know G.L.O.S.S at their shows demand dudes get out of the way and women come up the front for once.
As individuals? Be careful of where you're standing, that you're not harshing anyone's buzz with how you're acting, and calling out your friends if they do shady shit.
One of the coolest things I've seen recently was a big fest on the weekend where kids under 15 could get into all the shows for free too.
None of it's perfect but it's better than nothing, y'know?
Safe spaces: look, the worst sex pests I've ever met have all been anarchists. The biggest preachy hypocrites I've ever met have all been crusties with ipads who go get their washing done in their parents mansions. The longer you hang around the more frustrating the hypocrisy becomes. But it's still better than nothing, y'know?

funniest thing I have ever scene at a safe space squat show: they invited a bunch of local breakdancing sudanese kids in from the nearby housing commission flats to put on a piece on a bill with some punk bands. No one realised they were a hardcore christian group. Watching a bunch of anarchists forcing themselves to stay and enjoy it because cultural relativity or whatever while these kids jumped around yelling PRAISE JESUS and homophobic shit was SO FUCKING FUNNY.

Yup...haha. I know those people haha.
But yea, I was just responding to the look at the 1990s...but when I get around of old punks with perspective and life experiences...it is usually really plesant and awesome.

oh yeah the 90s were just as bad. But like there's four ways to grow old in that crowd:
1) become an activist and leave punk behind
2) settle down, realise that you were pushing aside some potential allies, chill out and hopefully still do cool stuff
3) bin it and become a DJ
4) follow the logical progression of hardline straightedge and become an absolute religious fundamentalist. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Funny enough, a lot of the best gigs in my home town were at this church. A lot of the jerkier holier than thou kids stayed away. They had a prayer at the beginning of the night (didn't have to be involved if you didn't want to) and that was all the Christian they did. It was more about keeping the kids off the streets (and probably researching haha). The dude that ran it's kid was in a non-Christian band. My friends were in this great metal band and all they did was talk about doing acid...the venue paired them with some Christian metal band that dropped out because of the pairing haha. It was a nice venue...they kept it pretty clean and stuff and worked with people of all beliefs.
There is also this good hip hop scene down here where everyone is really nice and they play all kinds of shows and bring people in from all different kinds of music (like acoustic, singer songwriter, etc and actually hang out at a lot of shows). Thing is they just aren't into punk rock haha. But they are a pretty laid back scene.

Pretty accurate...I guess I went through 1 to go to 2 and thinking about going to number 3 (sometimes). And then I realise I like playing guitar!

I have never heard of Whirr outside of people bitching about them on this forum… just think if it hadn't been for you guy's giving a shit about a band that you clearly should never had given a shit about I still would not know or care who the fuck they ever were… think about it.
P.S
Also.. from what I have gleamed from this shit I don't care whoever GLOSS is either… this is all very boring.

Let's call it Whirr // Nothing. They probably won't need those names.

That reminds me of a time one of my friend's bands broke up. Another one of my friends asked him if he was cool with using their name because he liked it so much.
Top 3 cringe moment in my lifetime so far.
