Well, voerking, anything Tony Williams played on is ludicrously good. Although, I do prefer earlier Tony Williams Lifetime stuff.
And, of course, that counts, ProCarsteNation. That's fusion in the truest sense.
Here's something totally along those lines:

the album i posted was from 1970, so the only thing earlier than that is 'Emergency!'. i agree that one is pretty clearly the best of all the Lifetime related stuff. I do like the 'New Lifetime' stuff, but it gets increasingly cheesy. this track is incredible, though...i even dig the singing:

Holdsworth is BLAZING!

Yeah,
Emergency! is the only one I really love.

I have that 4-disc Bitches Brew listening in the car & hoping it informs some of the stuff I'm doing w an instrumental 4-piece. Hoping.

man, I didn't know this thread existed, but I picked up a copy of Soft Machine's Third by chance this morning, and hoooolllyyy shittttt, this is 100% up my alley, especially the murky tape production. I'm not a really big fusion guy in general, as I generally prefer the earlier threads of the genre that stick closer to the punk/free-jazz simplicity side of things, like Lifetime's Emergency (love it to death), Mclaughlin's Devotion (super weird), and prog is usually a no-go for me, sticking to the kosmische/krautrock side of the fence. Miles' stuff isn't fusion to me like most people define it, it's way more raucous and badass in its blatant determination to piss off as many subgenre cults as possible. Definitely going to comb through the stuff posted here though.

yeah, I mean even if I didn't like them they get points for the Burroughs reference (working my way through some D.H. Lawrence and a giant text on 16th century magick/religion in England, and then I'm gonna crack open that Burroughs book you got me btw, thanks again).

Does this count? There fuse a lot of stuff into jazz

Plus Joey Baron on drums. One of my favorite drummers ever.

Yeah, Joey Baron's a great drummer. I tend to think of that more as mash-up jazz, but it could definitely be considered fusion.
