I have no idea what Jerome's Dream is, but TJL are fucking amazing there's no point in having a heavy stylistic reference point that's so singular, IMO.

But this happens aaaaaaaall the time

Like choose a genre or scene and it has a similarly singular reference point

A) Where/How does a commonplace nature validate anything?

B) it's 2015 and everybody wants to be in a noise rock band -- but that doesn't actually mean you have to rip of TJL to do so.

Oh, I didn't intend to validate it. Just saying the Jesus Lizard thing is just one example. If anything I was saying, it's an epidemic.

And it's hard to avoid. I thought neonblack was pretty real saying, when he writes songs, they're basically Jesus Lizard songs. I don't play noise music nor do I like TJL but when I write songs, it's extremely difficult not to ape the chaotic indie rock I like. I'll play just a few chords and I know that those are Titus Andronicus chords. Or I'll sing a certain way and know that it's Jeff Mangum/Neutral Milk singing.

Harold Bloom wrote about this in literature, "the anxiety of influence," one of the major hurdles being a creative person is balancing the desire to pay homage to your influences without merely copying them...

also disliking David Yow is, I'm pretty sure, against the law or is at least a mind crime of a fairly severe order.

I have this problem where everything is a Brand New riff and I only play in hardcore bands

This is accurate

They were "important" but... I've literally listened to their entire discog. They didn't do anything that great

I think people liked the idea of their True Punx™ cred and as a result pretended to actually like them

RIGHT?!

I sit down to play guitar

Turn on the OCD

Ooh that sounds nice

Turn on a little bit of delay and reverb

Ooh that sounds nice

Playin' some alt-rock, modern-rock chords, Drop D down a half step

Ooh that sounds nice

Add in some harmonics, fifth fret harmonic in between the riffs!

Ooooooh, that sounds real nice

WAIT

FUCK IT'S A BRAND NEW RIFF

I live in australia so it'll be 2017 before it filters over here. Enough time for me to get in on the ground floor!
