Little different than full MIDI but...I'd say it depends on you and your actual use as to whether it should be 'attached'.
I agree here, usually an expression pedal seems to be an extension of the pedal it's plugged into, rather than something on its own.
Unless it's some crazy fancy one that has 60 outputs and 7 LFOs or something.

I want to enter a small board (I have the perfect three pedal combo) but I'm so happy with my current board that I really don't want to tear it down
