Re: What are you reading?
finished the rum diary by hunter s. thompson yesterday. good book, i'm not on the same drunken level as him but a lot of the book's ideas rang true with me.
and the next ..4 books i will be reading at once are better never to have been, tinker tailor solider spy, the blind assassin, and bowerman and the men of oregon.

Re: What are you reading?
Holy fuck, I remember absolutely falling in love with The Rum Diary when I was either a sophomore or a junior in high school.
I'm definitely overdue for a reread.
Right now I'm going back through this in bits and pieces:

and this concludes the adventures of paul kemp, the drunken journalist. he read the signs and saw it coming, but he was too much of a lecher to step out of the way

Re: What are you reading?
Best line in the whole book, for my memory's money, is as follows:
"With the palms zipping past and the big sun burning down on the road ahead, I had a flash of something I hadn’t felt since my first months in Europe - a mixture of ignorance and a loose, “what the hell” kind of confidence that comes on a man when the wind picks up and he begins to move in a hard straight line toward an unknown horizon."

+1 for needing to give The Rum Diary a reread.

Do any of you have Kindle/Nook/whatever readers? How do you like it?

behndy bought a Kindle recently...he's really hyped about it. I've thought about getting one, but I can't see it replacing the feel of a real book in my hand. If I traveled more, I'd probably have one, tho.

Re: What are you reading?
yah. see..... i'm a nerd too. i was super against eReaders. i love the idea of having an ipod of books and having my entire library accessable and taking up no space, but i love the weoght of a book in my hand. the smell of paper. all that. so i always thought i'd just HATE a Kindle or Nook or whachaever.
my whole family are avid readers, and my mawms had always said the same thing. "it'll never replace books..." etc. i got her one for the past Mother's Day, explained how it's returnable for 30 days, and bought her the book she was currently reading. she's not a techie at ALL. and she hasn't bought a real book since. she loves the thing. gets all pissy if she forgets it at home.
so i played with it a bit and bought one for me. they just did it RIGHT. thing is awesome. i've already torrented every book i have (i torrent music, if i like it i buy it from whatever site pays the artist the most, but fuck paying thousands to get what's basically yhr manuscript/to the book printer's file for media i already purchased in paper format) ever bough. 's made me re-read things i forgot about, the store is super convenient 'cause if there'zs a cell connection or wifi you can always pick up a new book. screen is perfect for text display.....
so yah. i like mine's. i'm glad that if i'm in Japan, or Thailand or Italy and i finish the books i've brought then i don't have to pay lile $40 for some shitty bestseller 'cause that's all they have in English.
but fuck a Nook. if i wanted a muti-media portable device i'd pick up a Droid tablet. the Kindle is JUST books, and it's screen looks like paper, is viewable from any angle, and doesna tire your eyes. the Nook is a half-ass tablet with eReader software.
..... i like it a lot.

Started re-reading Tom Wolfe's 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test' last night. I love the way Wolfe writes.
